Premier League Predictor: Round 2 Predictions

Well, I already wasn't feeling great about my performance in Round 1 of the Premier League Predictor, and after getting just 5/10 correct with a single Exact, I then saw just how well lots of you did!

In case you haven't already seen, we had lots of players very close to winning the Superbru Jackpot (28pts = £10,000) in the first round of the season. Seeing scores of 25+ including 27.5 suggests I need to up my game a bit so let's hope for a more successful weekend!

Here are my thoughts on each game in Round 2. Let me know how your predictions compare in the comments.

Brighton vs. Manchester United

Round 1 couldn't have gone much better for Brighton so it's certainly tempting to back them for another victory here, particularly as they've had their fair share of good results against Manchester United, but I did think there were some promising signs for United in their win over Fulham. Yankuba Minteh looked really sharp for Brighton and he could well cause problems for United since they'll likely have Diogo Dalot filling in again on the opposite side to his best, but I think the visitors can earn a point. Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Crystal Palace vs. West Ham

Crystal Palace were a bit unfortunate last weekend with Eberechi Eze's goal being disallowed and I think they should have enough to win this game with West Ham likely to need some time before hitting their best after so many transfer incomings. I do think it's only a matter of time before the Hammers start performing strongly, but this might be a good time for Palace to meet them and their recent record in this fixture is sound. Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-1 West Ham

Fulham vs. Leicester

To me, this looks like a slightly more straightforward one as Fulham should taking the points. It was good to see Jamie Vardy back with a Premier League goal in Round 1 and Leicester City did improve with the crowd behind them against Tottenham but their first half display was shocking and I think you have to worry for them over the season as a whole. This is the kind of home match Fulham need to be winning even at this early stage. Prediction: Fulham 2-0 Leicester

Manchester City vs. Ipswich Town

There's only one likely outcome here but I am interested to see how Ipswich Town approach this game. At home last weekend against Liverpool, we saw a really strong, intense first half from Ipswich as they looked to put down a marker in the top flight before fading in the second half, but it's probably unwise to do similar at the Etihad because they'll almost certainly concede 4 or 5. Will we see Kieran McKenna adapt to a slightly more defensive approach to try and keep his team in the game for as long as possible? A Manchester City win is of course likely either way but I'm keen to see the approach from the visitors. Prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Ipswich

Southampton vs. Nottingham Forest

Southampton will obviously be disappointed that they didn't manage to defeat a 10-man Newcastle side last weekend, but it's tough to really judge how they'll fare in this game off the back of that since games with red cards are so different. My instinct says Nottingham Forest have the greater amount of attacking quality and I'm going to go with an away win. Prediction: Southampton 1-2 Nottingham Forest

Tottenham vs. Everton

You can't have total confidence, because Tottenham should have easily beaten Leicester on Monday night and didn't, but this does look like a very kind opening home fixture given where Everton are at currently. After last week's awful start against Brighton, Sean Dyche has lowered expectations even further if anything when giving his player availability report, so it would be quite an upset for the Toffees to get a result in this game. Prediction: Tottenham 3-0 Everton

Aston Villa vs. Arsenal

After what we saw in the meetings between these two last season, this is a huge game. Unai Emery and Aston Villa essentially cost Arsenal the Premier League title with two stunning performances last season, and so though it feels a bit different with them now meeting so early in this campaign, the stakes remain quite high. For me, the timing of this fixture does favour Arsenal a bit as they look to make amends this year, and I'm sure Mikel Arteta will have learned from last season's defeats. Another Emery masterclass shouldn't be ruled out but I think we might see a narrow Arsenal win. Prediction: Aston Villa 0-1 Arsenal

Bournemouth vs. Newcastle

Newcastle feel like the more obvious team to pick here but I'm wondering if Bournemouth might get something. Central defence is even more of a problem for the Magpies now that Fabian Schar got himself a straight red and Bournemouth have become difficult to beat under Andoni Iraola. I'm going with a score draw. Prediction: Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle

Wolves vs. Chelsea

I think Chelsea are going to be a bit of a nightmare to predict again this season - all three outcomes feel equally possible in this game to me. Wolves have had Chelsea's number in recent seasons and weren't exactly played off the park by Arsenal last weekend, but it feels like they might still need a centre back and a Pedro Neto replacement before the transfer deadline? Obviously Neto is now at Chelsea so he could have a say against his former club and though I think the Blues will concede based on how they've defended against both Manchester City and Servette in the past week, perhaps they'll find a couple of goals themselves? Prediction: Wolves 1-2 Chelsea

Liverpool vs. Brentford

Finally, this should be a winning start for Arne Slot at Anfield. Brentford had a decent opening weekend themselves in Round 1 but I'm not sure they'll be able to trouble Liverpool away from home and this is a great chance for the Reds to build on the win over Ipswich ahead of a huge game at Old Trafford in Round 3. Prediction: Liverpool 3-0 Brentford
