World Cup knockouts: What happens if a game goes to penalties?
With the World Cup Round of 16 beginning this Saturday, many of you have been asking how our World Cup predictor game will work if a game goes to penalties. As an explainer, here are the rules which can also be found on the tournament info page here.
Simply put, penalty shootouts are excluded from Superbru. If you think a match will end in a shootout, pick a draw.
Picks must be made for the end of normal plus any extra time. Any match going to penalty shootouts will be scored as a draw.
Example 1: Your pick is Brazil 2 - 1 Mexico. The match is drawn at 1 - 1 after 120 minutes and goes to a penalty shootout. Brazil win the shootout and progress, but you will not score a Result point because your result for the end of extra time was incorrect: you picked a win while the match was a draw.
Example 2: Your pick is Brazil 1 - 1 Mexico. The match is drawn at 1 - 1 after 90 minutes and goes to extra time where Brazil grab a late winner. You will not score any points for this game as the match didn't go to penalties. All those who picked Brazil to win will receive at least a point.

If the match ends in normal time (< 90 mins + stoppage)
Anyone who has picked the correct winner will score a Result, Close or Exact point as usual, depending on the accuracy of their score prediction. The only change from the group stage is that if a game is level at the end of normal time then all picks stay live heading into extra timeIf the match ends with a winner in extra time (> 90 mins and < 120 mins + stoppage)
Anyone who has picked the correct outcome will score a Result, Close or Exact point as usual, depending on the accuracy of their score prediction. The score at the end of extra time will be the basis for scoring. Picks for a draw will not score any points because the match has ended with a winner without going to penalties. If the match is drawn and goes to a penalty shootout
The match will be scored as a draw with the final score from the end of extra time (120 mins + stoppage).
