World Cup 2023: Day 3 Preview

Yesterday saw three heavily expected wins at the Rugby World Cup before the crunch game between England and Argentina also ended up being surprisingly one-sided which meant none of Day 2 results were particularly close.

That's good news for those of you that went bold with your margins, as the summary below shows.

Rugby World Cup Day 2 results:

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy 52-8 Namiba ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฆ
โœ… Result predicted by 96% of Superbru players
๐ŸŽฏ Exact margin predicted by 0.1% of Superbru players

A strong opening performance from the Azzurri as they scored 7 tries in this 44-point win over Namibia. Tommaso Allan converted all seven, having also kicked a 3-point penalty early on.

โ˜˜๏ธ Ireland 82-8 Romania ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด
โœ… Result predicted by 99% of Superbru players
๐ŸŽฏ Exact margin predicted by 0.1% of Superbru players

No messing about from the number 1 ranked side in the world as they put Romania to the sword in Bordeaux, scoring 12 tries on their way to a 74-point win.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia 35-15 Georgia ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช
โœ… Result predicted by 98% of Superbru players
๐ŸŽฏ Exact margin predicted by 7.8% of Superbru players

There were far more margin points earned on Superbru in this game as the Wallabies begun their World Cup campaign with a win, as Eddie Jones picked up his first victory since returning to Australia to become Head Coach. Ben Donaldson, who started at fullback on the international stage on the first time, was Man of the Match as he scored 25 of Australia's 35 points.

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ England 27-10 Argentina ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท
โœ… Result predicted by 38% of Superbru players
๐ŸŽฏ Exact margin predicted by 0.3% of Superbru players

A strange/frustrating/incredible match to finish with depending on your allegiance! Despite being reduced to 14 men after just 2 minutes due to Tom Curry's red card, England managed a comfortable victory thanks to a George Ford masterclass. Ford scored all 27 of England's points, including 3 drop goals, against an Argentina side that seemed to implode on the night and never came close to taking advantage of the extra man they had for the large majority of the match.

Rugby World Cup Day 3 schedule

Today, Round 1 of the World Cup will come to a close with 3 fascinating fixtures. Chile will appear in the tournament pool stage for the first time, defending champions South Africa will begin their campaign and then we have what should be a very competitive final fixture of the round in Bordeaux.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japan vs. Chile ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ
โฐ Kick-off at 13:00 local time
๐ŸŸ Stadium de Toulouse

Japan are strong favourites but it will be very interesting to see if Chile can cause some problems with their unknown status on this stage. Reports suggest Japan captain Kazuki Himeno is a doubt which would be a blow for both the Cherry Blossoms and many of our fantasy teams.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South Africa vs. Scotland ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ
โฐ Kick-off at 17:45 local time
๐ŸŸ Stade Velodrome, Marseille

The Springboks begin their title defence with a difficult opening fixture against Scotland who are a considerable threat to both of the 'big two' in the group of death, Pool B. Both nations have named strong looking sides so we could be in for a classic; albeit one that sees toothpaste blue vs. white change kits rather than green and gold vs. dark blue.

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ Wales vs. Fiji ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฏ
โฐ Kick-off at 21:00 local time
๐ŸŸ Matmut Atlantique, Bordeaux

This final match should also be a belter as it's the third game in this 8-match round that has the Superbru community split close to 50/50. After beating England at Twickenham last month, Fiji will be confident that they are strong enough to begin with a win in what looks like a fairly open Pool C but Wales are considered narrow favourites on the big stage by our community, particularly since Fiji's first choice fly-half Caleb Muntz has been ruled out of the tournament.

Which of the Day 3 matches are you most looking forward to? Good luck with your picks!

If I have learnt anything in the warm up games, it is that warm up games are nothing to go by, there will be 3 great games today as Japan is nowhere close to what they were in 2019, Scotland also lately has a knack of pitching up in big games, Wales has been up and down, with all that said.
