URC: Round 1 Predictions

The United Rugby Championship returns for its second season, and we’re hoping for an unaffected fixture list from start to finish!

Can the Stormers retain their crown? Will an Irish team wrestle back supremacy? Will Zebre win a game? We’re excited to find out.

Here are my URC predictions for Round 1.

Benetton v Glasgow

A visit to Benetton is a potential banana skin for every team, but I think Glasgow are in for a strong season and they are the better side on paper. Glasgow by 6

Zebre v Leinster

If Zebre do win a game this season, it’s unlikely to be this one. Leinster will be determined to win the trophy this year, and this could be a long day for the hosts. Leinster by 23

Cardiff v Munster

Munster have a strong recent record against Cardiff, and like Leinster, I think they’ll want to make a statement to start the season. Munster by 13

Lions v Bulls

The Lions will be tough to beat at home this year, but their local rivals know all about playing in Johannesburg and they look like a stronger squad. Bulls by 8

Scarlets v Ospreys

The home team usually wins this fixture, and I’m backing another home win here with the Scarlets likely to push for a place in the Top 8 this season. Scarlets by 9

Edinburgh v Dragons

I’ll need to see some big improvement from the Dragons before I pick them to win, particularly an away game at Edinburgh where the hosts are so strong. Edinburgh by 11

Ulster v Connacht

Another home win looks likely to bring home the Grand Slam Points in Round 1! Ulster should push Munster and Leinster all the way in the Irish Shield again this year. Ulster by 8
