Upsets of the weekend: 3-6 Nov 23
It's a good job we limit this weekly feature to the top three upsets, because there were so many surprise results across our football tournaments this past week!
Football fans have seen a crazy amount of drama across Europe in the last few days, particularly in the Premier League, which has meant competition for a place on our 'upsets of the weekend' podium has never been more fierce.
2% picked Real Madrid's draw with Rayo Vallecano, but that's nowhere near this week's top three. 1.2% predicted Bristol City Women would get their first win on the board in the WSL. Still too many people getting it right. 1.1% predicting Mainz' first Bundesliga win of the season would come against Leipzig? Still slightly too many.
Here’s a look at the most unpredictable results we saw over the weekend on Superbru Football. That is, the football scores that were predicted by the smallest % of people across the football tournaments that we run.
This result came early in the weekend on Friday night. Newly promoted Las Palmas have been going fairly well this season, but it still seemed highly unlikely they'd get the better of Atleti who had only been beaten once so far in this LaLiga campaign prior to this fixture.
However, as you can see above, Las Palmas came out of the break very well after an uneventful first half and found themselves two goals in front when Benito came off the bench to score his first goal of the season. Alvaro Morata's late strike proved to be no more than a consolation meaning this result is a big blow for Diego Simeone and his team who missed a great opportunity to put themselves in a very strong position in the title race.
A nightmare result for Milan, this. The Rossoneri were already winless in three after very tough fixtures against Juve, PSG and Napoli, so this looked like a favourable game to have before their next PSG clash where they could build some confidence. Instead, they've become the first team this season to lose to Udinese in Serie A.
Despite having very little possession, Udinese created as many if not more clear chances than Milan in this one and Roberto Pereyra's penalty was enough for three points after Festy Ebosele was brought down by Yacine Adli. A pleasing first win for Udinese after 7 draws in their opening 10 games!
Top of the podium this week are Luton Town who managed a fantastic result against Liverpool and even came very close to a first ever Premier League home victory! Interestingly, this draw is actually slightly more of an upset than a home win would have been as 0.6% of our community had the Hatters to win.
Liverpool created far more chances in this game as you'd expect but Jurgen Klopp admitted a draw was probably the right result given the defensive resolve Luton showed as well as their threat on the counter which resulted in the opening goal as Issa Kabore broke away to then cross to Tahith Chong.
Luis Diaz's goal slightly spoiled the party at Kenilworth Road, but his goal is of course a fantastic story in itself given the horrendous situation he and his family are currently facing in Colombia.
What a weekend of football that was. There's little time to get your breath back though as the Champions League returns in just a few hours!
