Upsets of the weekend: 27-28 Jan 24

Considering it was the first weekend of FA Cup action on Superbru Football this weekend, you could be forgiven for expecting this Upsets of the week feature to be littered with 'Cupsets' due to the 'magic' of that tournament that we're always told about. However, perhaps partly because of that discourse, 4% of the Superbru community correctly predicted Maidstone United would beat Ipswich Town on Saturday which means that result is far away from this week's Upsets podium.

Here’s a look at the most unpredictable results we saw over the weekend on Superbru Football. That is, the football scores that were predicted by the smallest % of people across the football tournaments that we run.

3rd: Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach (Bundesliga)

1.4% of the community predicted a draw

In quite a turn of events, Borussia Monchengladbach appear in this feature for the second week running except this time they are the upsetters rather than the upset. After suffering an unexpected defeat to Augsburg last weekend, Die Fohlen dug in very well at the BayArena to hold Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen to a point.



It means the lead that Xabi Alonso's team hold at the top of the table has been cut to two points following Bayern's 2-3 win at Augsburg on Saturday. Leverkusen dominated this game, but their finishing was off throughout with both wingbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo missing big chances.

2nd: Barcelona 3-5 Villarreal (LaLiga)

0.7% of the community predicted a Villarreal win

A truly wild match. Both teams entered this game in desperate need of three points but for very different reasons - Barca needed to keep their faint hopes of getting back into the title race alive and Villarreal needed to get away from the relegation zone after a terrible opening half of the season. The visitors were excellent and good value for the 0-2 lead they had within an hour, but when Barcelona managed to fight their way back and turn things around to lead 3-2, you'd never have predicted this final scoreline.



After Goncalo Guedes came off the bench to score his first goal for the club and level things up, Alexander Sorloth eventually bundled over a 99th-minute winner to both pain and humiliate Barca. The icing on the cake goal from Morales that was eventually scored in the 102nd minute seems to have come so late that it didn't show up from our feed on the above screenshot!

Post-match, Barcelona legend and head coach Xavi announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

1st: Juventus 1-1 Empoli

0.3% of the community predicted a draw

So how can you possibly top that for first place on our Upset podium this week? Well, it certainly wasn't as dramatic, but even fewer people expected Juventus to drop points in Serie A this weekend. Though they might not be as strong as the Juve sides that dominated Italian football for a decade not too long ago, Max Allegri's squad have been quietly picking up points all season with just 1 defeat in 22 games which means they're the only team currently competing with a very strong Inter.



Inter and Juve meet this coming weekend at San Siro, which means dropping points here was the last thing Juventus needed. A red card after just 18 minutes for Arkadiusz Milik made what should have been a routine fixture a very difficult afternoon in Turin and though Dusan Vlahovic still put Juve in front early in the second half, they couldn't hold on.

Two very costly points dropped as Inter won yet again against Fiorentina thanks to a goal from, you guessed it, Lautaro Martinez.
