Upsets of the weekend: 2-3 Dec 23
It's Monday, which means many of us are looking through Superbru results and leaderboards to inspect the damage.
In comparison to many rounds on Superbru Football, things were actually relatively predictable in many of Europe's top leagues but here’s a look at the most unpredictable results we saw over the weekend on Superbru Football. That is, the football scores that were predicted by the smallest % of people across the football tournaments that we run.
The Championship is notoriously chaotic with unexpected, bonkers results all over the place, but Sheffield Wednesday avoiding defeat in two consecutive games really has caught a lot of us by surprise as last week's draw with Leicester (picked by just 1.7% of the community) has been followed up by this win over Blackburn.
The Owls remain rock bottom of the Championship even after this result but they're now within 3 points of Rotherham and seemingly on the up under Danny Rohl so it will be interesting to see if they can find some form away from Hillsborough too. Blackburn will be disappointed to have missed out on a chance to move inside the playoff places here and they face a difficult clash against Leeds next.
We can all thank Hector Bellerin for this one, guys. The former Arsenal full back was sent off just 27 minutes into this game which handed bottom of the table Almeria a huge advantage and even though the hosts still couldn't find a first win of the season, the goalless draw was a considerable upset on Superbru.
Manuel Pellegrini's Betis opted to batten down the hatches and dig in for a point following the red card and fortunately for them, none of Almeria's 20 shots made it past Rui Silva. That means the visitors will have left this game the happier despite being massive favourites pre-match, but a frustrating game for Superbru players as such red cards are the sort of thing that is tricky to account for!
This week's top spot goes to Nantes and they're worthy winners of the 'Upset of the week' crown purely because they managed to score a goal against Nice. Francesco Farioli's team have been ridiculously good defensively so far this season, conceding just 5 goals in 14 games, and this defeat ended a run of 8 straight clean sheets.
This was also Nice's first defeat in Ligue 1 in 2023/24 so Florent Mollet's goal after 25 minutes really was a significant one. It means Nice have slipped to 4 points behind PSG at the top, while Nantes have ended their 4-match winless run to get themselves back inside the top half.
