Upsets of the weekend: 13-14 Jan 24

In addition to many domestic leagues returning to action in Europe following winter breaks, this past weekend saw the start of AFCON and we've already had plenty of games from that tournament emerge as contenders for this Upset of the Weekend crown!

Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana all failed to win on Sunday but only one of them make this week's Superbru upset podium. Here’s a look at the most unpredictable results we saw over the weekend on Superbru Football. That is, the football scores that were predicted by the smallest % of people across the football tournaments that we run.

3rd: Egypt 2-2 Mozambique (AFCON)

2% of the community predicted a draw

Egypt are the most successful team in AFCON history so it was no surprise to see almost everyone backing them to beat Mozambique (ranked 111 in the world) on Sunday, but the underdogs managed a point and it was so nearly a victory!

Egypt's star man Mohamed Salah scored a penalty deep in injury time which saved at least some embarrassment , but Egypt are now under pressure for the remainder of this short group stage. Group B already looks wide open, as in the group's other game Ghana were beaten 1-2 by Cape Verde which only 2.6% of Superbru players predicted.

2nd: Almeria 0-0 Girona (LaLiga)

1.7% of the community predicted a draw

The second most unexpected result of the weekend on Superbru Football came in LaLiga as Girona, who have miraculously made themselves title contenders this season, finally slipped up away at bottom of the table Almeria.

Girona still went top of the table with a point as Real Madrid were busy winning the Spanish Super Cup so didn't play in this LaLiga round, but this really was a messy afternoon for Michel's team as midfielder Aleix Garcia, who is perhaps their best player, was also red carded which means he'll miss next weekend's clash against Sevilla.

1st: AS Monaco 1-2 Reims (Ligue 1)

1.1% of the community predicted a Reims win

It's arguably surprising to see this result at the very top of the podium this week given Reims are having a good season, but this was a very good win away from home for Will Still's team as they defeated Monaco. A 1-3 scoreline after creating plenty of good chances is an impressive feat, particularly since one of Reims' best attackers Junya Ito is currently absent on international duty at the Asian Cup.

For Monaco, this will be a real disappointment having also lost at home before the winter break, and they've now dropped to 3rd in Ligue 1. A difficult trip to Marseille is next for Adolf Hutter and his team.

As the intro says every week, this focuses on the top three upsets on Superbru Football so it's based on actual data rather than being subjective. The Ghana defeat is mentioned as being picked by 2.6%, meaning it was less of an upset than the Egypt draw. 16 Jan 15:26

Kyle, read the results of the Serie A games. The Florintina game clearly shows that a draw result was picked by 3% meaning that it was nowhere close to being in the list of a top three upset. 16 Jan 15:47
