A fortnight ago I took some risks and ended up with 2 out of 4, so last week I played it safe and ended up with…2 out of 4. What a frustrating game this can be.
It’s the last round of regular season matches in New Zealand, albeit with the threat of cancellation or postponement hanging overhead.
Here are my Super Rugby predictions for this weekend.
Force v Waratahs
The Force have been a little better than expected, and although they’ve lost all four of their matches so far, three have been relatively close, and if they ever had the opportunity to play at home in Perth, they might pick up a win. This game is in Sydney, and after thrashing the Reds last week, I’m backing the Waratahs. Waratahs by 13
Highlanders v Hurricanes
The ‘Canes have now won 5 matches in a row, including that away win in Christchurch a couple of weeks ago, and the respective streaks make it look like an obvious pick on Superbru. However, both TJ Perenara and Ngani Laumape are missing, both of whom are key players in the backline. It makes it a tighter call, but for now I’m sticking with the Hurricanes. Hurricanes by 4
Reds v Rebels
Both of these teams were involved in upsets last weekend, with the Reds being thrashed by the Waratahs and the Rebels somehow beating the Brumbies. On that basis, the Rebels should beat the Reds here, but we all know it doesn’t work like that in Australia. Another tricky one, but I’m giving the Reds a chance to make amends. Reds by 4
Blues v Crusaders
There’s a reasonable chance that this fixture won’t be played, or it will go ahead behind closed doors, with Auckland in Covid lockdown. As things stand, it’s set to be played, but keep an eye on the news. For now, I’m going to back the Crusaders as a sensible provisional pick, and then give it some more thought if it gets the green light and teams are named. Crusaders by 7
