South Africa squad named for 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup is a very exciting one for South Africa as they're set for their first appearance at a finals since hosting the tournament in 2010.

South Africa squad

Hugo Broos has today his confirmed his 26-man squad.

Here's the 26-man list in full:

Mbekezeli Mbokazi (pictured) is a very promising young defender who recently joined Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates so has had a head start in getting used to conditions in the US. Similarly, fellow centre back Olwethu Makhanya has been playing for Philadelphia Union since 2023 when he was signed from Stellenbosch.

Goals could well be tricky to come by so Lyle Foster will be looked to in that regard after scoring 3 Premier League goals this season for Burnley, while much of the rest of the attack is made up of Orlando Pirates players who were this season's PSL champions, winning the title ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns by a single point.

How will they get on?

South Africa will feature in the opening game of the tournament which is likely to be a very difficult test against co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

The other two teams in Group A are South Korea and Czechia who are both fairly solid teams, so advancing to the Round of 32 would be a great achievement for Bafana Bafana.

What do you make of the squad Hugo Broos has picked? Let us know in the comments!
