Premier League: Round 25 Predictions

Round 24 of the Premier League had an unusual format with the rescheduled Merseyside derby only bringing the round to an end on Wednesday, some time after the other fixtures.

This round will be similar with Liverpool's game at Aston Villa moved to Wednesday 19 February because of their involvement in the League Cup Final so watch out for that!

I finished with 5/11 in Round 24 thanks to that James Tarkowski equaliser! I thought Everton might get something just purely based on narrative and so it proved - that late strike and the scenes that followed was a moment that you knew was Premier League and Goodison history even while watching live. Great stuff.

On to Round 25 then. Here are my thoughts on each game.

Brighton vs. Chelsea

It's always so difficult predicting matches that have literally just been played and there's back-to-back meetings between the teams. Brighton fully deserved their win in the FA Cup last weekend as Chelsea were terrible, but will we see the Blues respond in the league? It's possible because Brighton are so inconsistent but I think Nicolas Jackson is a huge miss for Chelsea with injury as he's the only actual centre forward option they have despite spending so much money. I think this might finish level. Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Chelsea

Leicester vs. Arsenal

Talking of teams that no longer have a centre forward, Arsenal are now in a real pickle without Kai Havertz for the remainder of the season since it sounds like Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are still some way off and Gabriel Jesus is obviously already out for the season too. You'd think they can just about get past Leicester regardless since the Foxes aren't the strongest but things could get tricky in the next few weeks so I'm intrigued to see how Arteta will setup for this game. Prediction: Leicester 0-2 Arsenal

Aston Villa vs. Ipswich Town

Aston Villa have made the sensible move of increasing the number of available attackers they have at their club rather than reducing like Arsenal and Chelsea, so they should have too much for Ipswich Town who must still be gutted about that Southampton result. Villa remain a bit weak defensively with so many injuries but I think Axel Disasi will do OK there as a new arrival and it should be Villa creating most of the chances in this one. Prediction: Aston Villa 3-1 Ipswich

Fulham vs. Nottingham Forest

I'm really in two minds with this one. Fulham look to have an advantage in terms of preparation time and were excellent in beating Newcastle away in the last round, but how often do they actually go and win a game they start as narrow favourites for (at least according to the bookies) at home? Outside of that shocker at Bournemouth, Forest have been excellent on the road of late so I'm going with them. Prediction: Fulham 1-2 Nottingham Forest

Manchester City vs. Newcastle

If Newcastle are at it in this game, there's no reason they can't pick up at least a point. In midweek, Manchester City actually looked a fair bit better for over an hour, competing well with Real Madrid, but yet another late drop-off is of course concerning and they seem to lack belief as well as physicality in the middle of the park. It's still tough to go against them at the Etihad but after picking up a couple more injuries again in midweek too, I'm going with a draw. Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Newcastle

Southampton vs. Bournemouth

Fair play to Southampton on the win that they managed at Ipswich but I think it's still very difficult to consider picking them to win on Superbru. Bournemouth are the far better side and should win comfortably. Prediction: Southampton 0-3 Bournemouth

West Ham vs. Brentford

Brentford have finally started to improve their away form so could be dangerous here but I'm going with West Ham as I think there's been reason for encouragement in the first few performances under Graham Potter. With Jarrod Bowen back fit and plenty of time to prepare for this game, I'm going with a home win. Prediction: West Ham 3-1 Brentford

Crystal Palace vs. Everton

David Moyes deserves immense credit for the run Everton are on and they now look to be on the way to surviving quite comfortably this season, but after all of the emotion surrounding another good result in midweek, I feel this might be a good chance for Crystal Palace to take advantage of a fatigued Toffees side. Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-1 Everton

Liverpool vs. Wolves

Liverpool came very close to essentially wrapping up the league on Wednesday, so I think even with that disappointing draw at Goodison, they're clearly in a very strong position and I'd be surprised if they don't win this game. There's a bit of talk about this being the start of the wheels falling off after the FA Cup exit at Plymouth too, but both defeats are quite easy to explain (Everton away is 10x more difficult for Liverpool than any other club) and I'm not sure Wolves will trouble them too much. Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Wolves

Tottenham vs. Manchester United

Finally, this could be absolutely any scoreline. Manchester United have struggled against Tottenham in recent meetings but if Spurs still don't have any players back then this is a big opportunity. Equally, Spurs have had a rare midweek off, and United are bound to be weak down their left side without Lisandro Martinez? There should be goals and I think there'll be a winner, right now, Spurs seem slightly more likely? Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Manchester United

Like last time, I'll add something on Aston Villa vs. Liverpool in the comments once we get closer to kick-off but that will be a real test for the Reds! How do your thoughts compare on the 10 matches above?

Maybe a little early, though I was considering Arsenal's injuries as well as the points margin. Still time for Forest to close the gap as well I suppose which I'd love to see! 14 Feb 15:01

Yes think I agree with you. When writing the above I was considering risking a Villa win but that draw against a 10-man Ipswich side doesn't fill you with confidence. Going 1-3 Liverpool now, Villa stretched defensively as you say. 18 Feb 11:36
