Portugal squad named for 2026 World Cup

Portugal's 2026 World Cup has been named today with Roberto Martinez settling on his list of players for the tournament.

Portugal squad

Unlike the other squads that have been named so far, Martinez has named 27 players rather than the permitted 26, but Portugal say goalkeeper Ricardo Velho is going only for training purposes and won't actually be on the bench for any matches.

Here's the 27-man list in full:

As with every Portugal squad since 2006, Cristiano Ronaldo is the headline name. Provided he stays fit, Ronaldo will become the first player ever to feature at six World Cups this summer, though Lionel Messi could also match that feat assuming he's in the Argentina squad.

The squad is largely as expected with fantastic quality throughout but particularly in midfield, though the inclusion of Mallorca's Samu Costa is arguably a surprise ahead of Joao Palhinha (Tottenham) and/or Mateus Fernandes (West Ham).

How will they get on?

Portugal are in Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan and Congo DR. They'll expect to go deep in this tournament, but can Roberto Martinez deliver on expectations?

Gonna predict last 16 or QF. Not as convinced by them as others, for many reasons, but will keep them to myself for now.

Though I will say Neves, Mendes and Vitinha are by a mile their three best players for me.
