Premier League Predictor: Round 5 Predictions

Last weekend's Premier League round had some of the biggest upsets we've seen so far this season with a goalless draw at Brighton and Nottingham Forest's stunning win at Liverpool which meant Superbru points were harder to come by.

Since then we've also had a long Champions League round with the new format coming into play so keep in mind some of the top PL sides are coming off some midweek travel.

Here are my views on each game - let me know which ones I've got wrong in the comments!

West Ham vs. Chelsea

West Ham are 0/2 at home and Chelsea are 2/2 away so a Blues win makes sense here, yet my gut feeling on this game is that the Hammers get something. Chelsea rarely win away at West Ham and we quite often see the Hammers raise their game at the London Stadium when facing a London rival or 'big' Premier League club. With the firepower Chelsea have in attack, it's quite possible they win this game despite not playing very well as we saw at Bournemouth last week, but I'm not convinced so I'm going with a classic Saturday lunchtime slot upset. Prediction: West Ham 2-1 Chelsea

Aston Villa vs. Wolves

This is another derby and another game that could be considered a 'bogey fixture' for Aston Villa (at least until the most recent meeting), but I'm not going to risk the upset on this one. Wolves played quite well last week but still found a way to lose which is what we saw from them quite often last season too. I think Gary O'Neil's a great coach and the performances are often there, but it's hard to back them to win when they so often don't. Villa should be fine despite Tuesday's (successful) trip to Switzerland. Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Wolves

Fulham vs. Newcastle

This is a difficult one and I think I'm going to go with a draw, particularly if Alexander Isak ends up unavailable as Eddie Howe has suggested is possible. Newcastle's results have been great so far despite not looking amazing in terms of performances, but Fulham away is a tough fixture and I think the hosts might be good for a point so long as they're close to their best. Prediction: Fulham 1-1 Newcastle

Leicester vs. Everton

A big game. Both teams will feel this is the chance for a first win of the season and crazy though it seems after their recent performances, I think I'm going to back Everton to pick up three points. Yes, that may include actually holding on to a 2-goal lead. Given the nature of their recent defeats and the EFL Cup exit in midweek, I think Sean Dyche will already be under real pressure if they lose this game too, but there's clearly at least something there if they've gone 2-0 up twice and Leicester are very beatable. Prediction: Leicester 1-2 Everton

Liverpool vs. Bournemouth

I actually think Bournemouth are even better equipped than Nottingham Forest were to cause an upset at Anfield, but you'd have to be very brave to predict an away win despite that result. The Reds should be right at it from the first whistle following their unexpected defeat and the midweek Champions League win in Milan shows that there doesn't seem to be much of a hangover. Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Bournemouth

Southampton vs. Ipswich

My instinct is that Ipswich win this game but surely Southampton pick up a point some time soon? I thought Saints were going to be more competitive than they were against Manchester United last week, while Ipswich continue to compete well - last week's 0-0 at Brighton was a great result for them. It wouldn't be much of a surprise if Southampton end up coming out on top at home but I'm following my gut. Prediction: Southampton 1-2 Ipswich

Tottenham vs. Brentford

I had this one marked for an upset too given how Tottenham are currently playing but Yoane Wissa is a big loss to injury for Brentford. It's not out of the question that the Bees get something regardless but I think Spurs should have enough, potentially with Dominic Solanke getting his first goal. Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Brentford

Crystal Palace vs. Manchester United

Another game where it's easy to be tempted by the upset! It's hard to erase that Palace 4-0 win over United from your memory (particularly if you're a United fan, I expect!) but in truth the Eagles haven't look too capable of that so far this season. They're another team that tends to raise their level when playing the big sides at home, but I think I'm leaning towards a narrow away win after what has been a good week for Erik ten Hag and his team. Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United

Brighton vs. Nottingham Forest

It feels harsh to predict against Nottingham Forest after their fantastic win last weekend, but Brighton have been similarly impressive at the start of this campaign and I feel last week's goalless result was somewhat of an anomaly as they don't look like a side that are going to have too many 0-0s. Forest haven't conceded many so it should be a battle but I think the Seagulls will edge it. Prediction: Brighton 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Manchester City vs. Arsenal

Particularly after Arsenal's recent displays in this past week, we can expect a similar type of game to the ones we saw between these teams last season in this huge clash on Sunday afternoon. In Mikel Arteta's 5 games away at Manchester City with Arsenal so far, they've scored one goal, and I think the focus will again be on defence here. They managed a 0-0 in this fixture last season, but will Pep Guardiola have worked them out this time?

I think this will be fairly low scoring but it feels like at least one chance will come along for City and with Erling Haaland in the form that he is, I'd be surprised if Arsenal can manage a third clean sheet in the space of 8 days. If the goal comes early, things could open up and we might end up with a classic which would obviously be preferable, but I'm not sure the Gunners will play with too much attacking belief without Martin Odegaard and I'm going with a City win where they eventually find a breakthrough. Prediction: Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

its football as anything can happen in any football game. even a team that is very strongly fancied to beat another team can have its plans ruined if they get a red card earlier in the game which can switch the tie in favour of the team which was not very fancied to win the game e.g. monaco vs barcelona in the uefa champions league a few days ago. 22 Sep 06:21
