Premier League Predictor: Round 3 Predictions

Last weekend I managed a much needed improvement in the Premier League Predictor as I was fairly pleased with 8/10 for 15 points.

Round 3 is the final week before the first international break of the season, and there are some huge fixtures.

Here are my thoughts on each game. Let me know how your predictions compare in the comments!

Arsenal vs. Brighton

This is an interesting opener because a result for Brighton isn't out of the question, but I think you'd still have to be brave to go against Arsenal. Last week's win at Aston Villa was important in that it was a result they couldn't manage last year, so I think they'll be playing with plenty of confidence this weekend. Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Brighton

Brentford vs. Southampton

I think Brentford should take this one. It's hard to get too excited when you look at Southampton's lineups in the opening couple of rounds, but in fairness I think both Lesley Ugochukwu and Aaron Ramsdale are very good signings. Goals might remain more of a problem throughout the season, but Southampton will be harder to beat once those two are up to speed and consistently in the team. Prediction: Brentford 2-1 Southampton

Everton vs. Bournemouth

Everton desperately needed that midweek League Cup win and I think Sean Dyche will be asking them to act as if this is the start of the league season now because they were really poor in Rounds 1 and 2. Can they improve enough to get a result here? It's very hard to call. Bournemouth are a well coached side and so while I'm wary Everton will surely improve at some point, I'm going with a narrow away win. Prediction: Everton 1-2 Bournemouth

Ipswich Town vs. Fulham

Ipswich are in need of a good display here. The two league defeats were always likely but a loss to Wimbledon in the Cup will have hurt and this feels like their first realistically winnable league game. However, Fulham should be the stronger side. Recruitment wise I think Fulham have done well this summer. Ipswich's window has understandably been busier since they need a number of players following promotion, but there are a few question marks in my opinion. Arijanet Muric as the new first-choice goalkeeper has already shown on debut what was often the case at Burnley last season - the benefit of good general passing ability is largely erased if you're giving away a goal or two a game through errors. Prediction: Ipswich 1-2 Fulham

Leicester vs. Aston Villa

This should be another away win as Aston Villa look to bounce back from that Arsenal defeat. I think it'll be reasonably competitive but there's no doubt that Villa's lineup will have the greater amount of quality and I'm not sure Leicester's backline will cope. Prediction: Leicester 0-2 Aston Villa

Nottingham Forest vs. Wolves

It feels logical to pick Forest here, especially since Wolves were so bad defensively against Chelsea, but I wouldn't be shocked if I end up getting this one wrong. Wolves will improve in my opinion but it's been a solid start to the campaign for Forest and they need to make the most of these favourable opening fixtures because their schedule gets a lot tougher after the international break in terms of the difficulty of their opposition. Prediction: Nottingahm Forest 2-1 Wolves

West Ham vs. Manchester City

Like most people, I very rarely predict against Manchester City and it doesn't feel like this is the week to risk doing so. Guardiola's side have started strongly and my only real hesitation is over whether or not West Ham will manage a goal. I'm going with 0-2 rather than 1-3. Prediction: West Ham 0-2 Manchester City

Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace

It obviously won't always be 6-2, but I do think there'll be a lot of goals in Chelsea's games this season as they have plenty of attacking quality but don't look good defensively and Crystal Palace are among many Premier League teams who are well equipped to hurt them. After Palace's opening two results, I think you have to go with Chelsea though. Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Crystal Palace

Newcastle vs. Tottenham

There should be a few goals in this game, too. I have a feeling Newcastle will come out on top as their game is perfect for exploiting how open Tottenham often leave themselves defensively, but the centre of the Magpies' defence is a concern. There should be goals at both ends but I'm sticking with my hunch of a Newcastle win. Prediction: Newcastle 3-2 Tottenham

Manchester United vs. Liverpool

A tough one to finish with. If this was at Anfield, I'd be picking Liverpool without hesitation, but United should raise their game in front of their own fans in this fixture and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick up a point as they did last season. It'll be fascinating to see how Arne Slot does in his first taste of this rivalry and while I think it's been a very good start for him in the Premier League, it's still a big ask to win this game at the first attempt. Prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool
