Euro 2024: Round 2 Predictions

Round 1 of the Euros Predictor is officially complete and as some of you will know from my opening predictions, I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of goals scored!

International football is often quite cagey at these major tournaments and a level below the best European club competitions but we've seen some really positive intent so far with the majority of teams pressing high with some success.

After managing 9/12 in Round 1 with an Exact for Slovenia 1-1 Denmark, I'm going to go with a few more goals in Round 2 to try and nail some Exacts so let's hope the goals don't try up as we get nearer to the knockout stage...

Here are the Round 2 fixtures. Feel free to drop your own thoughts in the comments section!

Croatia vs. Albania

These two teams surprised in very different ways in Round 1, as Croatia were unexpectedly poor for large parts of their defeat to Spain and Albania shocked everyone with the fastest goal in Euros history! Obviously that still wasn't enough for Albania in the end and I don't think what we saw in Round 1 is enough to change my feeling here that Croatia will win. Having lost heavily against Spain, they could do with winning by a couple of goals as well. Croatia 3-1 Albania

Germany vs. Hungary

Germany were very impressive on the opening night and I think they'll be fine here. Hungary fell short of expectations against Switzerland and are now already really up against it to progress. I can only really see a comfortable victory for the hosts. I like the balance of their side with Toni Kroos offering so much composure in the middle of the park, and even if they struggle to convert chances initially (no reason to believe they will), Nicolas Fullkrug was excellent off the bench in Round 1. His goal was one of my favourites in the round simply because he hit so cleanly. Germany 2-0 Hungary

Scotland vs. Switzerland

Having just said what I did about Germany, Scotland didn't half make it easy for them. Steve Clarke's team need a massive improvement in a very short space of time if they're to get anything from this game and I think it's unlikely because Switzerland were a lot better than I anticipated against Hungary. Granit Xhaka was excellent as he has been all season for Bayer Leverkusen and Breel Embolo's impact from the bench is a very promising sign for the Swiss. Scotland 0-2 Switzerland

Slovenia vs. Serbia

Big game. There's a real opportunity for at least one of these sides to progress in this group, and I think this is one of the more difficult predictions in Round 2. Serbia look to have more firepower, but Slovenia did well to get a point against Denmark and I think they'll score in this match. I was tempted by the draw, but that's not too much use to Slovenia with England to come in Round 3, so I wonder if Serbia just edge it with both teams chasing a winner. Slovenia 1-2 Serbia

Denmark vs. England

As we saw in Round 1, England enjoy making life difficult for themselves so this is unlikely to be too one-sided, but I think the Three Lions will make it 2 wins from 2. I don't think either side will make too many changes, as England will surely want to avoid rushing Luke Shaw back ahead of the knockout stages. Christian Eriksen was very influential in Round 1 for Denmark and that's something to look out for since he often occupies the space in behind where Alexander-Arnold played for England against Serbia (the cause of much debate) but you'd expect England to cope and come out on top. Denmark 1-2 England

Spain vs. Italy

I'm really looking forward to this game after how well we saw these teams play in Round 1. Spain look like they have a really nice modern edge to their usual style with Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams on the flanks which makes them far less predictable, but I thought Italy were also really good after going behind against Albania with Nicolo Barella a joy to watch.

The midfield battle is going to consist of so much quality because I thought Fabian Ruiz was also fantastic even outside of his excellent goal vs. Croatia. Said battle may well decide this game and if that's the case, I'm picking the side that has Rodri. Admittedly, after that strange penalty incident against Croatia, Spain are arguably fortunate to have Rodri available. Replays made it look as if he didn't even make contact, but since he himself made little complaint, surely it's a red card if it's a foul with no attempt to play the ball? Spain 2-1 Italy

Slovakia vs. Ukraine

Who knows what to think in Group E now!? For me, this group has gone from being one of the least interesting to perhaps the most interesting in the space of a round, as Ukraine and Belgium are now under severe pressure. Can Ukraine respond here? All of the things I said about being excited about their squad still stand, and while they were well under par in Round 1, the goalkeeper errors and world class finishes arguably make the scoreline look worse than things actually were. Slovakia will know that a point here will almost guarantee them a place in the knockouts but I'm going to stick with Ukraine and back them to edge a narrow win. Slovakia 0-1 Ukraine

Poland vs. Austria

Poland were better than I expected them to be against the Netherlands, certainly in terms of attacking intent at times, but Austria are the better side in my opinion so I'm backing them to narrowly come out on top. They've an incredible record under Ralf Rangnick and competed well against tournament favourites France so this should be three points for them so long as they are at least close to their best. Poland 1-2 Austria

Netherlands vs. France

This should be a cracker and though the Netherlands are without some key players at this tournament themselves due to injury, they may get lucky and avoid having to face Kylian Mbappe in this game if he's not recovered and masked up in time for this match following his broken nose against Austria. France should still come out on top, but I think and hope there'll be goals in this game because Cody Gakpo in particular looked really bright for the Dutch in Round 1 and he was very well supported on that left side by Nathan Ake. I'm going to risk a high-scoring one simply because I hope it's what we'll get. Netherlands 2-3 France

Georgia vs. Czech Republic

Georgia competed well with Turkey in a game that was basically an away match given how loud that Turkish support was, so it will be interesting to see how they go here against the Czech Republic who don't look to have a great squad but really tested Portugal on Tuesday. I'm tempted by a draw as I think both teams will score but perhaps Czechia will sneak a win as the team with more experience of major tournaments. Georgia 1-2 Czech Republic

Turkey vs. Portugal

As I just mentioned, Turkey's support for their Round 1 game was incredible and we can expect more of the same in Dortmund here as they go up against the group favourites. The atmosphere helped make Turkey v Georgia one of the best games of the tournament so far, so this should be quite an occasion as well given Portugal's talent and I'm expecting an improved display in front of goal from Portugal having been given a wake up call by Czechia on Tuesday. The fact that they still came away with a win is a great sign for Roberto Martinez's side - I thought Vitinha was excellent in midfield and the composure and tempo he brings could be key in what will be a very noisy game. Turkey 1-3 Portugal

Belgium vs. Romania

Belgium were definitely unlucky at times against Slovakia with the handball decision particularly harsh, but obviously in the case of Romelu Lukaku big chances being missed isn't really a new thing and they're going to have to improve in this match against Romania's notoriously strong defence. It was a huge surprise to see Romania score 3 times against Ukraine and such impressive goals (with some help from Lunin) aren't necessarily sustainable, but their clean sheet was less of a shock and Belgium will have to play well for the win they now desperately need. I'm going to back them to find a way through eventually, but it's hard to have too much confidence after these nations' respective results in Round 1! Belgium 1-0 Romania

when i am talking about england's performances been worse in their opening two games of euro 2024 compared to the 2022 world cup in qatar, i am strictly referring to the performances of the team not the four points which england has collected so far. england were very brilliant in three games played at the 2022 world cup in qatar and those brilliant performances came in the 6-2 win over iran, the 3-0 win over wales and the 3-0 win over senegal. england even scored 14 goals in total at the 2022 world cup in qatar. it will be a very big miracle if this england team at euro 2024 manages to score 10 goals in total at the tournament if their performances continue to be underwhelming. 25 Jun 06:08
