Euro 2024: Quarter-Final Predictions

Like many of you, I had 5/8 in the Round of 16 after failing to predict any of the upsets. I'm annoyed I didn't go with Switzerland as I certainly considered picking them, but Turkey's win over Austria surprised me and I obviously didn't expect Portugal 0-0 Slovenia!

On to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals then and what a lineup we have. Each of these games should be excellent and I think predictions will be fairly evenly split for at least three of them, too.

Here's a look at the path to the final for the remaining 8 nations along with my quarter-final predictions. Feel free to share your own views in the comments section.

Spain vs. Germany

For me, this is the best quarter-final right off the bat. Germany have been strong in this tournament and could well come out on top given their home advantage, but I think Spain have been a level above everyone so far and if they keep up their performance levels I think they'll win this. I was expecting a relatively decent showing from Spain in this tournament, but they've exceeded expectations with Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams arguably playing at an even higher level than we've seen them for their respective clubs in the recent LaLiga season.

Without wishing to jinx anything, I think there'll be goals. Both teams are better in attack than in defence and if we get an early goal then things will have to open up. I'm going with a Spain victory and hoping for a cracker. Spain 3-1 Germany

Portugal vs. France

Another very difficult one to call, but my gut feeling is that we might see a small upset with Portugal progressing to the semis. It never feels comfortable to predict against a team with Kylian Mbappe as he could easily win this tie on his own, but the French attack just hasn't fired in this tournament and Mbappe himself has commented on the lack of supply from midfield. Adrien Rabiot's suspension gives Didier Deschamps a clear opportunity to change that by adding a more creative player to the midfield three, but I'm not fully convinced he will.

Portugal were disappointing against Slovenia with too much revolving around Ronaldo who is almost trying too hard at this point, and while I would probably use him as an impact substitute in this game, I can see Portugal winning regardless of whether or not Roberto Martinez starts him. As I say, I'll be keeping an eye on the midfield that Deschamps selects, but based on what is expected, I think it will be Portugal that have close to as much solidity but also far more creativity in the middle of the park. Portugal 2-1 France

England vs. Switzerland

This is the definition of a heart vs. head prediction for me, because though I'm picking England in the hope that a few changes and a slightly different shape result in a much improved display, it's impossible to pretend that England have been anything other than disappointing in their four matches so far. It sounds as if Ezri Konsa is coming in for the suspended Marc Guehi and that England may then change to 3 at the back with Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo Saka used as wing-backs to match up with Switzerland. I think any tweaks to what we've seen so far should be welcomed, but this is going to be tough for England.

My head says Switzerland win this tie. They were excellent against Italy and I think they're the kind of team that England really won't want to play. Whereas a match against 'stronger' teams like Portugal or the Netherlands would at least give England some space to play in when attacking, Switzerland are defensively organised enough to frustrate them in a similar way to what we've seen so far in this tournament while also then having the quality in midfield and attack to hurt Southgate's side offensively more effectively than the likes of Slovenia and Slovakia. Still, I have to hope for an England win and if the English forwards get up to even 75% of what they're capable of this could yet be a comfortable victory. England 2-1 Switzerland

Netherlands vs. Turkey

I really didn't expect Turkey to beat Austria, particularly without Hakan Calhanoglu, so it'll be interesting to see if they can manage another upset here. The Netherlands haven't been consistently strong in this tournament so a surprise result clearly isn't out of the question, but based on the respective performances of these nations last time out I think you have to go with the Dutch.

That's no disrespect to Turkey who were always going to have to ride their luck a bit after scoring so early in their Round of 16 tie, but the Netherlands looked at their sharpest against Romania and this feels like a golden opportunity to reach the final four. I'm looking forward to watching as the atmosphere should be incredible, but the Netherlands look to have more potential match winners with Cody Gakpo the most likely candidate based on the Euros that he is having. Netherlands 3-1 Turkey
