Cricket World Cup: Round Nine Predictions!

So far in Round 8 of our Cricket World Cup predictor I've had a mixed bag. I failed to pick the Australia win over England but my Pakistan gamble came off! India are currently playing the West Indies and posted 268 - the Windies are 75-3 in response after 19 overs so it's a little early to call how I'm doing there but I feel I'm still in with a chance with my 'Easy' India pick if Chahal finds some turn.

Round 9 should be an absolute belter. Just look at these fixtures! We're now at the business end of the group stage and England have kindly made it rather interesting for us all. Some tough picks coming up, here are my thoughts on each game. Feel free to leave your own in the comments.

Sri Lanka vs. South Africa

I haven't picked South Africa many times in this tournament because they've been dreadful but I feel they might win this. Sri Lanka's washed out games are arguably what have given them an outside chance of a semi-final and in my opinion, the only game they've actually looked good in was that fantastic win over England last time out. Can they perform again in this one and beat the Proteas? There's certainly a chance but South Africa should play with more freedom now and hammered Sri Lanka not so long ago in a 5-0 ODI series win. Prediction: South Africa (comfortable)

Pakistan vs. Afghanistan

Pakistan haven't let me down when I've picked them in their last two games so I'd be very disappointed if they did here! Afghanistan aren't strong enough with the bat despite how well their spinners often restrict opposition. Judging by the only game at Headingley in this tournament so far, this might be low scoring but I'd be amazed if Pakistan ruined their semi-final chances at this hurdle after the two they've just got past. Prediction: Pakistan (comfortable)

New Zealand v Australia

There's some pressure on New Zealand after their first loss of the tournament so it'll be fascinating to see how they respond in this (very tough) match. Australia were very impressive against England and worthy winners. Though Neesham proved me wrong about NZ lacking runs aside from Williamson, I still have concerns about their ability to deal with what is a strong Aussie bowling attack. I see another win for the reigning champions which would put them in a great position at the top of the standings. Prediction: Australia (easy)

England v India

It suddenly feels very hard to pick England to win this game. Their talent in ODIs isn't going to have just disappeared so a lot of their issues must be pressure related and as Eoin Morgan has said himself, they'd become used to hammering teams on very flat pitches. We haven't been seeing such pitches in this tournament so far and Edgbaston has been among the toughest for batsmen. Though the game is in Birmingham, this will feel like a home game for India support wise and they look a better, more composted outfit at the moment. Prediction: India (narrow)

Sri Lanka v West Indies

Not an easy game to pick for the moment with Sri Lanka still to play the Proteas before this one. On paper, the Windies look a better side and I expect to be siding with them but lets see how the Sri Lankans get on at Chester-le-Street before this match at the same venue. Prediction: West Indies

Update: Windies now 98-5 against India! Hoping they get up to 169..

Best of luck to all in Round 9!
