Champions League: Last 16 2nd Leg Predictions

After a respectable 5/8 correct picks in the first legs including a couple of Exacts for the Chelsea and Atletico games, let's see how we go with the second legs...

Remember, the away goal rule is no longer in play and Superbru picks include any Extra Time before penalties so that's something to keep in mind when making your own predictions!

Here are my thoughts on each game.

Bayern (1) vs. (1) Salzburg

I thought Salzburg would be competitive in their home leg but I was of course surprised like everyone else that they almost kept Bayern from scoring. In Munich, things are likely to be twice as difficult for them though and I'd be stunned if we saw anything other than a home win. Prediction: Bayern 3-1 Salzburg

Liverpool (2) vs. (0) Inter

A game away in the San Siro is never easy so Liverpool will feel they've achieved a near perfect result in the first leg of this tie and you'd now have to be very brave to go against them at Anfield. Inter will have to try and be aggressive but you just can't afford to leave space for the counter against Liverpool. Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Inter

Manchester City (5) vs. (0) Sporting

City are obviously through with the 5-goal advantage they already have but this is a tough second pick as it's so hard to tell how many they'll score at the Etihad. I'd be surprised to see 5 again and was going to go with 2-0 but I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of late goals as well considering how many Sporting have conceded in their defeats in this competition. Prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Sporting

Real Madrid (0) vs. (1) PSG

The goal came very late but PSG fully deserved their first leg win and I think they should have too much for Real Madrid away from home as well. Kylian Mbappe just looked a class above everyone else at the Parc des Princes which is quite something to say when you consider who he was sharing the pitch with and I'm not sure this Real Madrid team are capable of scoring the couple of goals they need without leaving the back door open for him/Messi/Neymar! Prediction: Real Madrid 1-2 PSG

Ajax (2) vs. (2) Benfica

Benfica have given themselves a chance with that first leg draw but I remain fairly confident it'll be Ajax that progress to the quarters. Ajax pretty much always score plenty of goals in each of their home games and I'm not sure Benfica will match them when on the road. Prediction: Ajax 3-1 Benfica

Manchester United (1) vs. (1) Atletico

United were fortunate to come away with a draw from the first leg as they were definitely second best but could that equaliser prove decisive? I think this one could well go all the way to penalties but part of me just feels Atleti will regret not taking more of their chances early on in that first leg? I might change to 2-1 United with a late goal in ET but let's go draw and penalties for now! Prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Atletico

Juventus (1) vs. (1) Villarreal

I though Villarreal might sneak this tie but now that they haven't won the home leg, I think Juve should probably get the job done. It will be very tough to head to Turin and win and I expect the visitors will try and frustrate Juve for as long as they can but as Dusan Vlahovic proved inside seconds of his UCL debut in the first leg, the hosts have quite a goal threat up front now. Prediction: Juventus 2-0 Villarreal

Lille (0) vs. Chelsea (2)

Lille were actually more positive than I thought they'd be in the first leg of this tie but Chelsea did of course manage a comfortable win at home regardless and it'd be a huge surprise to see them mess things up in France. I expect a fairly professional display from Tuchel's side in Lille. Prediction: Lille 0-1 Chelsea
