Argentina squad named for 2026 World Cup

Argentina's World Cup squad was named yesterday, with Lionel Scaloni settling on the 26 men he's hoping can defend the title.

More than half of the victorious 2022 squad have been named on the 2026 list, with notable names that have since moved on or been left out of this year's roster including Angel Di Maria, Joaquin Correa, Paulo Dybala and Guido Rodriguez.

Icon Lionel Messi is set for his sixth World Cup, which will be a new record that both he and Cristiano Ronaldo will achieve this summer subject to fitness.

As well as acting as a pre-season tour of America for Atletico Madrid, Argentina's World Cup squad includes a couple of standout youngsters in Nico Paz, who has been very impressive for Como since transferring from Real Madrid, and tenacious midfielder Valentin Barco who is about to join Chelsea from sister club Strasbourg.

Messi has dominated the MLS since moving to Inter Miami as you might expect, but his fitness isn't as consistent as it was which means it's perhaps unlikely we'll see a repeat of his remarkable 2022 tournament where he led his nation to glory.

The 38-year old will undoubtedly still be the main man when fit, but there are very capable attackers alongside him in Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez and Inter's Lautaro Martinez.

How will they get on?

Argentina famously lost to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 group stage before going on to win the tournament, so their performances against Austria, Algeria and Jordan might not be too significant, but how far can Scaloni's team go?
