A change to our Fantasy Tennis scoring ahead of 2024 Australian Open
Our first tennis tournament of the year begins this weekend as the Australian Open will see the world's best battle it out for the opening major in 2024.
Many of you have already joined our Australian Open Fantasy game, and now is a good time to make your picks for Round 1 as the draw for the tournament has now been made meaning the majority of first round fixtures are known and visible within our game.
For the new season, we are making a slight change to our scoring system in fantasy tennis, with the aim of ensuring things remain competitive and interesting right through to the finals.
In addition to the points that have always been received in the existing scoring system for net sets won and net games won, players that win a match will now be given match winner points.
The number of points received for winning a match will gradually increase later in the tournament.
As the top players tend to score well in the opening rounds against opponents that tend to be weaker due to the way the seeded draw works, match winners will receive just 1 additional point in Rounds 1 to 4. However, once we reach the quarter-finals, match winners will receive an extra 2 points. Winning a semi-final is worth 3 points and winning a final is worth 4.

This change will also lead to greater competitiveness within Superbru pools as even if you have a disappointing start to the game with your Round 1 picks, a comeback is more possible now that a greater number of points will be on offer later in the tournament.
Finally, this update is a significant step towards reducing the possibility of the loser of a match scoring slightly more points than a match winner in exceptional circumstances. This was a flaw that was exposed in our previous scoring system in rare cases which we hope to have now largely removed without harming the balance of the game by over-rewarding players that manage fairly routine wins on the court.
2019 and 2021 champion Naomi Osaka is making her Grand Slam return after having her first child and she faces a tough opening round match against 16th seed Caroline Garcia, but sadly Rafael Nadal's planned comeback in the Men's tournament is no longer happening after he suffered a fresh injury during a match in Brisbane. Nadal won this tournament in both 2009 and 2022.
Good luck with your opening predictions this weekend and we hope this scoring change adds something a little extra to our experience of this tournament!

Why the change?
Just as in some of our Predictor games in other sports such as rugby and cricket, a rising win point value ensures that the added importance of big matches within a tournament is reflected on Superbru. This change will also lead to greater competitiveness within Superbru pools as even if you have a disappointing start to the game with your Round 1 picks, a comeback is more possible now that a greater number of points will be on offer later in the tournament.

It is also nice to see that the net games won calculation is back - another improvement
Before each & every game point mattered now they will be undermined by a single break point perhaps costing the picker the net point, set 3 points and now these Match Winner 'freebies' of up to FOUR points, so EIGHT points if its in the Final. The final scores are what they are so why heap more misery on someone who picked the loser in a 50/50 match? Before, they occasionally got the consolation close points for picking a player who perhaps should have won on the day, due to more points won overall?
