2026 World Cup Predictor: Day 31

It's time for the World Cup semi-finals and what a lineup we have.

The seeding that FIFA introduced for this World Cup that ensured these top four ranked sides couldn't meet until the semi-finals has certainly had an impact, but equally, you still have to come through significant obstacles to get to this stage and it's hard to argue with the fact that this is about as exciting as the semi-finals could possibly be.

What's made this World Cup so great has been so many of the top players all playing at close to their best levels. Kylian Mbappe leads the Golden Boot race going into the semi-finals, but there's intense competition from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and particularly Lionel Messi.

Today

A semi-final between the two strongest teams in this tournament up to now.

Today's schedule:
  • 🇫🇷 France vs. Spain 🇪🇸 | Kick-off 14:00 local, 20:00 UK, 21:00 CET/CAT
A full match preview for every game in this World Cup is available on the picks page if you upgrade to Superbru Premium.

From this point onwards, I think it's impossible to feel overly confident in a Superbru prediction and it goes without saying that each of these semi-finals could go either way.

The last meeting between France and Spain was an absolute goal fest, but I think this is more likely to be cagey and reasonably low scoring, particularly since Spain's best method of defence against this terrifying France attack will simply be to keep the ball.

An early goal could blow everything open, of course, but I think France will be reasonably patient and look to pick their moments. Spain's strength is in midfield, so France will want Aurelien Tchouameni back fit and it sounds as if he'll be available.

I think I'm going with France. Spain have edged recent meetings and their record in major knockouts under de la Fuente is perfect, but Les Bleus have just been excellent in World Cups for such a long time now and in my opinion they've looked a level above everyone else so far in this tournament.

My main feeling is just that I'm very excited to sit back and enjoy it, because tomorrow's match is going to be an emotional rollercoaster for us England fans!

I hope you all enjoy the match too. Feel free to leave your own thoughts on the game in the comments.

I don't think the WC record of 13 goals by Justine Fontaine in 1958 will ever be beaten. (In one WC tournament. He could have played for Morocco. And that was just in six matches.

Yeah it will never be beaten. He was apparently a class player but people said Raymond Kopa was even better. 14 Jul 09:50

Also, it's Just Fontaine, not Justine. Justine is a girl's name lol. 14 Jul 09:53

Great knowledge though, Andy. I love when people do their research. 14 Jul 09:58

I should do better research. 5555😁😎 14 Jul 10:09

Nah it was good work. It's easy to get names wrong here and there.

If you like players from that era who scored a lot of goals, look into the Magical Magyars of Hungary. Obviously Ferenc Puskas was the start, but Sandor Kocsis had a ridiculous scoring rate in 1954. I think I am right in saying he averaged two goals per game in that tournament. They also had Nandor Hidegkuti. He's the guy who when Hungary hammered England at Wembley in 1953 (England had never lost at home before) 6-3 was very fluid with his position - back then the numbers you wore dictated your position, and he wore number 9 yet -played as a number 10 or deep-lying CF/false 9. This confused the English players who expected him to play like a poacher. 14 Jul 10:15

Gerd Muller and Eusebio were great, too. Portugal didn't qualify for the 1962 and 1970
world cups. Gerd Muller scored 14 in two world cups. Furthermore. Holland were one of the best teams in the 1970s and should have won the at least one WC. Their football was magical. Also, who can forget the Archie Gemill goal? 14 Jul 10:33

Yeah they were both fantastic forwards. Muller was an absolute goal machine - they mostly call him a poacher but he had more to his game than that. Still, Beckenbauer was the heart of that team.

Yeah the Netherlands were great in the 70s with Cruyff, Rensenbrink,Neeskens Krol etc. They really should have won it in 1974 especially after their early penalty against the West Germans in the final, but couldn't get over the line.

As a Scot I love that Gemmill goal. It is likely our best ever moment at a World Cup. 14 Jul 10:40

What about David Narey's goal against Brazil? 14 Jul 12:07

Yeah that was a belter too but we ended up getting hammered so Gemmill's better as we won the game (even if we didn't go through lol). 14 Jul 12:18

Great thought, Jack. I won't reveal what I am going with as I have been closed down in some pools, lol. But I agree fully with your main point that - at this stage - it's impossible to feel confident with our picks, it could do either way, and a lot of with these final four games past the 100 is luck.

Also, I wish there was no third place play off. It's one more opportunity for me to be caught, lol. 14 Jul 09:50

Haha I always think the 3rd place game is the one fixture that feels like it's more significant on Superbru than it is to the tournament 😁 14 Jul 09:53

Hahaah yeah Jack. What's the bets it costs me Marko's Club, I can feel it now lol, 14 Jul 09:54

Hey Jack maybe for the NEXT big money tournament (Should you do one) how about making the entrants earn their places from the previous season football pools. for example the top 3 or 4 players world wide from each of your pools and NOT just a few lucky guessers like you did this year !!!! Then maybe you'll get palyers with real football knowledge like these two guys. 14 Jul 11:01

40 close is insane lol. That's 4/10 games you have got a close. 14 Jul 11:00

You actually have 2 more correct outcomes than me, you're reading the games well, but like me several times (but not as often as you) you've just been unlucky not to get an exact.

If it was 2.5 points for an exact and not three you'd be higher up in the world. 14 Jul 11:01

@ fleeto2026. close scorelines are also very great scorelines. if you had managed to get 100 close scorelines in all the 100 world cup games that have been played so far you would be on top of the global charts now with 150 points and it would be very safe to say that nobody was going to catch you on top of the global charts now with those amount of points. 14 Jul 11:12
11,618 caps
Exactly Mate - closes are superb scorelines and are usually unfortunate not to get an exact. He could conceivably be right up near the top of the world with turning some of those unlucky closes into exacts.

Good way to put it too, that anyone with 100 closes right now would have the global league tied up and be the official winner. 14 Jul 11:16

I also have always believed that close scorelines show true predicting power. For example, if you have loads of exacts, some results but few closes, you can argue that's just luck of margins. But if you have some exacts, many closes and some results that shows you're reading the room right. 14 Jul 11:18

I have 36 closes. Difficult to recover 5.5 points in 4 matches 14 Jul 11:56

You never know Matteo - I am so worst case scenario with these games that I am worried I will get 0 points and you all get 12, lol.

Yeah see you there man - looking forward to playing against you guys. You're all highly skilled. 14 Jul 12:19
11,618 caps
Also, you never know. These two games are tight. If we both back different teams and you end up being right and getting exacts, you pass me before the 3rd place game and final. 14 Jul 12:22

Interestingly, Spain are seen as slightly more likely to win the final than England or Argentina on the Analyst, but they are seen as more likely to make the final (both of them). That backs up Jack's and the consensus view that the winner of tonight's game will be the favourite in the final - just that England and Argentina have a better chance against each other than they think Spain has against France,
