This season, for Super Rugby and Six Nations, we are running three different kinds of games. There is a risk of confusing them, especially as you invite friends to your pools, so here's a short guide to the different games and how they work.

Predictor / Tipping

The game that we became known for. Predict winning teams and victory margins - for example, if the Bulls are playing the Reds, you might pick the Bulls to win by 6. The Predictor game is beguilingly complex - it might sound easy, but you'll find yourself agonising over your predictions.

Fantasy Lite

Our new game format, launched in mid-2014 for the Rugby Championship. Each round, we'll provide 5 carefully curated bands of players from the available teams. From these you must pick:
  • One tight forward
  • One loose forward
  • One inside back
  • One outside back
  • One kicker

You will score fantasy-style points for your players' performances - for example, scoring tries or dominating lineouts.

Fantasy Lite has the fun of picking real-life players without the complexity of managing a fantasy squad - no transfers, no starting line-ups, and limited choice meaning you won't get overwhelmed by the number of available players - only the stars feature. This makes it simple and quick to play.

Fantasy

Our full fantasy format, in which you will select a squad of 23 players at the start of the season, and then field a starting 15 for each round. You can make limited transfers in and out of your squad each week. Fantasy is complex and requires time, but is very rewarding for those who enjoy the challenge, and especially for those who have deep rugby knowledge.

Full fantasy games are expensive for us to run, so we only lay them on for major tournaments: in 2015 this includes Super Rugby, Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup.

Psychological recommendation from the General

Our founder explains why you should try playing more than just one game: "If you've only ever played our Predictor games, we encourage you in particular to give Fantasy Lite a go as well. Personally, I know all too well the dark pit of despair I descend into on a Friday when the Hurricanes beat the Highlanders and I've picked the Highlanders by 8 in the Predictor game... but if I've hedged my psychological well-being on Fantasy Lite by picking Julian Savea from the Hurricanes as my outside back and he scores a brace, then it all seems much better!"

Enjoy the rugby season!
