Super Rugby Round 4 Predictions!

Round 3 was a shocker. You know things aren’t going well when the Sunwolves somehow beat the Chiefs away from home, and that only 3 out of the 7 matches were picked by more than 28% of people on Superbru. Somehow there were 18 people out of nearly 200,000 that managed to pick all 7, but the average was just 3.23 correct picks.

Sadly only two of my predictions were correct, and the one upset I did pick didn’t come off - the Blues laid siege to the Jaguares tryline but couldn’t find a way through. A late score there would have turned my red arrows into green, but that’s how it goes and I’ve taken it on the chin, ready to go again for Round 3. In Super Rugby, you have to pick the right upsets.

Here's an overview of how Round 3 went for the Superbru community:

Well done to Ashley Dreyden from South Africa who currently has the Yellow Cap in my 'Challenge Hutch' pool. Ashley had some solid Round 3 picks, only tripping up on that Sunwolves win.

Here are my predictions for Round 4 this weekend.

Hurricanes v Highlanders

There hasn’t been an away win in this fixture since 2015, and a home win feels most likely here. The Highlanders lost to the Rebels last week, and only narrowly beat the Reds at home the week before, whilst the Hurricanes were in dazzling form against the Brumbies in Round 3. Hurricanes by 13

Rebels v Brumbies

These teams played each other as recently as Round 1, in which the Rebels won in Canberra. Fresh off a victory over the Highlanders whilst the Brumbies were being thrashed in Wellington, the Rebels ought to win this too. Rebels by 11

Crusaders v Chiefs

What has happened to the Chiefs? Three defeats in a row so far this season, including the most embarrassing of home defeats to the Sunwolves last weekend - and it wasn’t even close. I can’t see them beating the defending champions and I’m not sure how big to go on the margin. Crusaders by 18

Blues v Sunwolves

I feel like the Blues are better than their three defeats so far suggest, and I’m still not ready to back the Sunwolves. Blues by 13

Waratahs v Reds

The Waratahs have won 9 in a row against the Reds, and although the Queenslanders have put in some reasonable showings so far this year, the Waratahs are the safest pick in this one. Waratahs by 16

Lions v Jaguares

This is another repeat of a Round 1 fixture, and the Lions won that by 9 points in Argentina. They’ve suffered two defeats since then, whilst the Jaguares have won their two matches, but with home advantage and the travel factor to consider, I’m going for another home win. Lions by 9

Bulls v Sharks

The Bulls are unbeaten in their last 7 matches versus the Sharks, and return to Loftus full of confidence after winning well at the Lions last week. Meanwhile, the Sharks lost at home to the Stormers, and surely the Bulls will make it a full house of home wins in Round 4. Bulls by 7

Best of luck to all.

IM ALOT LOWER ON MOST MY PICS. I ACTUALLY THINK THE CHIEFS, THE SUNWOLVES AND THE SHARKS COULD ALL END UP CREATING HAVOC WITH MY PICS THIS WEEKEND. THE CRUSADERS HAVE PUT UP A MOSTLY B TEAM AND THE SUNWOLVES ARENT VERY JAPANESE ANYMORE, DONT UNDERESTIMATE THEM.

Hi bro , what is your pick on Rebels vs Brumbies , last 4 games , Brumbies never defeated them , Sharks play dangerous, but still lost to Stormers. There are bettings like Rugby 5 , last week was rollover, anything can happen , ,obviously if Jaguars beat Lions with 4 points or Sharks win , it could be another rollover. 7 Mar 16:17

NAH THE TAHS HAVE A STRONG BACKLINE WITH BEALE AT FULLBACK AND FOLAU AT 14. ITS PROBABLY GOING TO BE THE MOST EXCITING GAME OF THE WEEKEND AND THE TAHS WILL WIN :) 7 Mar 10:15

Watch the Sharks, they going to be dangerous this weekend. Always show up against the Bulls. Equally the Red's are showing real character. Home ground for the Tahs but it will be closer than 16.

Spade? That's a bit Un-PC. It's Speight - like the undrinkable flatulent lager they service at Highlanders matches. There was a Detective named Sam Spade played by Humphrey Bogart. I'm just imagining Bogey with the wonderful Henry's magnificent Afro!

I agree that the Sunwolves could and maybe should win againt the Blues- see below. Can Henry help the Brumbies ahem 'Dig themselves out of a hole' in Melbourne? (Sorry I couldn't resist it!) 7 Mar 14:04

Seems cut and dry for 7 home wins and a grand slam, don't believe it. The first 3 rounds showed serious surprises, Brumbies and/or Sharks for the upsets!!!

When will everyone wake up to the fact that The Sunwolves can actually play a bit? The Blues back at home should have enough to win, but flying to SA then to another SA and back again will take more of a toll than the 70 miles from Hamilton to Auckland. The Crusaders would have won by a lot more if the wind had died down btw. I wrote last week that even the Chiefs v Sunwolves could go either way. I'm feeling more certain about them this week. However I'll need to look at the match ups of all 46 players.

The Tahs v Reds last year was 37-16 but the return game was a crazy 41-52 Try-fest in Brisbane. But no Norovirus (Nissannavarro or whatever his name is?) this year and The Reds look about 50% better.

Will Tom English do a 'Laumape' on the Brumbies I wonder? Will Laumape do a 'Laumape' on The Highlanders I wonder even more?

Think I'm backing the Sunwolves this week :)

Will the Brumbies scrum win them the game? Ref (Jacobs) comes into play. Crusaders half a B team. Sunwolves have benched Parker! Would have picked them otherwise. Lions a half inexperienced line up. Upsets and counter upsets on the go this week.

Lots of ???? for this weeks picks! I am backing Hutch on his picks this weekend. Margins might be a lot closer than we think. Crusaders B side will still beat the Chiefs, and I back the Blues to use there emotions (death of a teammate) as inspiration to bring the Sunwolves down from their "moon-howling cliff"

My bet is on all HOME teams in ROUND 4. Will the Sharks beat the Bulls home, or, will we have yet another match where the Bulls slaughter a team with a 30 something score.

Grand slam ticked off (which you also have now Hutch), suspect a god portion of the community got one this week (though it currently says only 104 GSP winners this week but I have seen that been initially inaccurate and later update which I think will be the case here) anyway not getting one will hurt, even if you got 6. I managed two exact margins (Lions and Waratahs), one where I was within one (picking Blues by 8) and almost managed to secure a margin point for the Crusader blowout but had picked them by 35 so was out by 6.
