Euros Predictor: Round 2 Predictions

It's fair to say I have some work to do in Round 2 of the Euros Predictor! The late flurry of Portuguese goals in Budapest last night handed me a much needed Exact but 5/12 was still disappointing overall. I know most people struggled with Monday's 3 results but elsewhere my gamble on a Ukraine draw was ruined by the late Dumfries winner for the Netherlands while Kieffer Moore's header for Wales denied me an Exact in that Switzerland game. I wasn't too upset about getting the England result wrong though!

The other big upset in the opening round was of course Finland's victory and I'd like to join so many others in wishing Christian Eriksen a speedy recovery - it's great to see his recent social media post confirming he's on the mend after some very scary scenes on Saturday.

So it's now time to make our picks for Round 2 and I could really do with a greater number of Exacts in this round. Here's what I'm going for in each match, let me know how your picks compare in the comments.

Finland vs. Russia

Not the easiest pick since it was difficult to take much from either of the Round 1 games these two were involved in - Finland obviously won in very unusual circumstances and then we didn't see much of Russia because they were absolutely dominated by Belgium. I'm slightly concerned by how little energy Russia showed in that defeat but I'm sticking with what I definitely would have picked before the tournament which is a Russia win. Prediction: Finland 1-2 Russia

Turkey vs. Wales

I can say the same about Turkey as I did Russia - they hardly had a kick against Italy! I, like many others, expected Turkey to cause a few problems in that opener but they could hardly get out of their defensive third let alone their half. Wales weren't amazing last time out but still managed a draw against a decent Swiss side and I'm wondering if they can do the same here. Turkey look better on paper but I was really disappointed with them so currently feel like going for a draw? Prediction: Turkey 1-1 Wales

Italy vs. Switzerland

As I just mentioned, Switzerland were good against Wales in my opinion (though they did sit off too much after scoring) but Italy were excellent in Round 1 and it'd be a big surprise to see anything other than another home win for them in Rome. I think Ciro Immobile finding a goal in the first match was important for them and they're still yet to add Marco Verratti to this team as well... Prediction: Italy 2-0 Switzerland

Ukraine vs. North Macedonia

Ukraine are favourites here after a respectable performance against the Netherlands but it does look as though North Macedonia could manage a goal if they have a go and I think they will. As we saw in Round 1, Ukraine have some talent in attack and both Zinchenko and Malinovskiy have the talent to control this fixture from midfield. Prediction: Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia

Denmark vs. Belgium

Given that the Denmark squad have been receiving crisis assistance following Saturday you'd expect that they'll understandably be below par for the remainder of this tournament and it feels quite trivial analysing how this match might go. Even before what happened and despite the fact that this match is in Copenhagen, Belgium would have been strong favourites and I think the Belgians' display against Russia has only strengthened their likelihood of winning. Prediction: Denmark 0-2 Belgium

Netherlands vs. Austria

I think we might see more of the same from the Dutch in this round - they should win, but they might make hard work of it. Not that we should really complain about that as the Ukraine game was a great watch on Sunday. There's a lot of talent in this Netherlands team and while I'm not sure they have the experience nor a good enough manager to go all the way in this tournament, they should now pick up maximum points in Group C after their Round 1 win. Austria have some capable players but are likely to mirror(ish) the Dutch formation and I can't see them winning too many of the individual battles. Prediction: Netherlands 3-1 Austria

Sweden vs. Slovakia

I really struggled to see how Slovakia were going to find goals in this tournament so they did really well to beat Poland in Round 1 - the own goal was the result of a decent attempt by Robert Mak and then Milan Skriniar's strike was excellent for a central defender. Those 3 points give Slovakia a great chance of advancing to the knockouts as they did in 2016 but Sweden are also in a good place after that draw with Spain and I think they should win this. It sounds silly when they had just 15% of the possession in Seville but there were moments where Sweden looked really dangerous in that game and Alexander Isak continues to look like a very good young striker. Though the team shape will be similar to Round 1, we should see Emil Forsberg have far more of a chance to show what he can do in this game, too. Prediction: Sweden 2-0 Slovakia

Croatia vs. Czech Republic

Tough pick. Before the tournament you'd have said Croatia definitely win this but after their fairly sluggish display against England and Czechia's impressive win over Scotland it feels like a more difficult prediction to make now. Patrik Schick obviously deserves all the plaudits he's been getting for his incredible goal against Scotland but I think his general play and role in this team is so important for the Czechs as if he plays as brightly as he did in Round 1 consistently throughout this tournament, they'll be difficult to beat. There's never been much question about the Czechs' ability in physical battles and from set pieces but for this game specifically, I'm not sure how useful those traits will be as Croatia can handle themselves just fine as well. Based on the space the Czech Republic gave Scotland, I think Modric and Kovacic might just win Croatia this game from midfield. They aren't going to be pressed like they were against England and unless Schick puts in another considerably above average display (though his regular level is still good!), I'm not sure they'll struggle too much defensively. Prediction: Croatia 1-0 Czech Republic

England vs. Scotland

On paper, there's only one team that should be winning this game but we all know how up for it both sides will be for this one and Scotland are therefore likely to be a tougher team for England to beat than they would be for other opposition. Steve Clarke's selection didn't appear the most attacking in Round 1 but to be fair, a more clinical striker than Dykes could have easily had 2 or 3 in that game as there were plenty of chances created, particularly by Andy Robertson who was excellent. We're still likely to see some changes from Scotland though and with Tierney supposedly ready to return, I think England will just need to make sure they can handle that left side to avoid an upset. Of course, Gareth Southgate isn't short of right-back options to help tackle the problem as he sees fit and then in attack, England have so many players that look as though they could really damage Scotland's defence. Prediction: England 3-1 Scotland

Hungary vs. France

Hungary deserve a lot of credit for how long they stayed in the game against Portugal and it looked for a moment like they might have stolen a win but for the offside flag! Of course, it ended up a fairly heavy defeat on paper and I think we'll see a similar scoreline in this fixture though France are likely to be more comfortable throughout. Despite not being at their best against Germany, I still think we saw exactly why France are favourites. The team looks incredibly balanced and composed, you've got the obvious superstars in Kylian Mbappe and N'Golo Kante and then other quality players like Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann just seem to find an extra level in this French team in comparison to their club form. Prediction: Hungary 0-3 France

Portugal vs. Germany

A massive game for both teams. Germany will again have home advantage but they lacked a cutting edge up front against France and that could well be their downfall again in this game since Portugal will be quite happy to absorb pressure and then hit on the break as we saw France do in the latter stages of the Round 1 game. That, plus the Ronaldo factor, has me leaning towards Portugal but Germany do tend to perform well in meetings between the pair and I think they'll probably find a goal one way or another this time around? I'm going 1-1 for now but I'm interested to see the teams. Using Kimmich as a RWB against France felt like a waste and it didn't really pay off so we could see him back as a 6 which would strengthen Germany in my opinion. Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Germany

Spain vs. Poland

Finally, we have the other game in the interesting Group E and the pressure is just on Spain to take their chances really. We know they'll have all of the ball and we know there will be opportunities for their forwards so it's just a question of whether or not they can take them. You'd think Enrique would opt for Gerard Moreno over Morata this time around given that Moreno bagged 23 league goals this season and I think Spain should would win comfortably - I'm not sure Poland will be as organised and disciplined as the Swedes. Prediction: Spain 2-0 Poland

Hi Jack, yet another well written synopsis. I'm in broad agreement. However you can't read too much into first game form. Teams will just be thinking, lets get through this and try not to lose. Players will think, don't make any mistakes, rather than being adventurous. So certain players & teams really will have to 'Go for it'. If they lose or draw they might be going home anyway.

One dynamic coming up will be the bigger teams resting regulars in Match Day 3 (3rd Round) fixtures. But some might do it in this second round if their 3rd round game is harder. So I'd check probable or known starting XIs before ALL picks. I can see some smaller teams getting the luck of the draw due to these rotations, most probably in Rd 3 though. But with only 8 of 24 to be eliminated every one should still have plenty of fight in Rd 3, as long as they don't lose in both earlier rounds.

BTW Christian Eriksen just sent a morale boosting tweet to Denmark (please note he is under heavy sedation still). "Hej Hej guys. I'm feeling much better man! Please do your best for me but don't forget to love one another too....oh look outside at the pretty trees the colours are so vivid! Wow a flying pink elephant!...oh yeah where was I man?? Just have fun....nurse nurse can I have some more of the pretty purple ones please?" (Just kidding, get well soon Christian! 29, is far too young to retire.)
