Summary
The first edition of this newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup is complete. Though it was perhaps Brazil's clubs who took this rare opportunity to impress on the global stage most, along with Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns, we had an all-European final as expected and it's Chelsea who are world champions.

The London club pulled off a big surprise in the final, defeating European champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 at MetLife Stadium, meaning their trophy cabinet really does now have it all having captured the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy this season as well as becoming the first team to lift this one.

Not for the first time in a big final, Cole Palmer was the star of the show. The 23-year old was involved in all 3 of Chelsea's goals, scoring a brace before assisting new signing Joao Pedro who has had a remarkable impact in this competition after being signed ahead of the semi-finals from Brighton & Hove Albion.

PSG will of course be disappointed to have lost this match since the Club World Cup would have been a large cherry on top of what has been a perfect regular season both domestically and in Europe, but the fatigue that has built up as a result of that campaign in which they have thrilled with an intense style of play appeared to cost them in New Jersey.

Next up

Next, players and staff from PSG and Chelsea can finally enjoy a very well-earned rest. However, most other clubs have already finished their holidays and are well underway in pre-season with league football returning in just 30 days.
