Super Rugby: Team of Round Fourteen

This week's Super Rugby team of the round based on the points received in our fantasy games is dominated by utility backs and players from the Reds vs. Waratahs game. The 'Tahs managed a 32-40 victory in Brisbane with Bernard Foley sending the ball through the posts 8 times and scoring a try to become this week's ideal kicker, but the fact that the Reds ran in six tries means plenty of their players have also made this TOTR.

Kwagga Smith moving to number 8 for this week's clash with the Highlanders only improved the strong fantasy form he has shown throughout this season. Smith was the best possible captain you could have had in Round 14 by quite a distance. Here's a look at the full TOTR along with the round stats that show the community average to have been a pretty healthy 165.

Most represented teams in this week's TOTR: Waratahs (4 players), Lions, Reds (3 players), Highlanders (2 players).

As mentioned, the number of utility backs in this team means that many of you will notice that a few players are not in the positions they actually played in at the weekend. Every season there are a few 'hidden gem' players that are considered more valuable due to a position change though this can of course work both ways with some players losing value.

Having started the season at full-back, Bryce Hegarty has now often been playing at fly-half which was the case in R14. Even without his kicking points (only one kicker per team), Hegarty managed 20.5 points in this round after scoring a brace. Both of the centres in this team are the other players 'out of position' as Kurtley Beale has moved to full-back for the Waratahs since Israel Folau became unavailable and Matt Faddes has also found himself at 15 for the Highlanders following Ben Smith's injury. Even before that switch, Faddes had been playing on the wing.

This week's back three is without any of the star names that have dominated those positions this season with Jordan Hyland and Courtnall Skosan the perhaps surprising names to join Hegarty. Since Round 3, Skosan has tended to score nicely when playing but Hyland has made his only two starts this season in the last two weeks.

As for the forwards, Captain Smith steals the show but it's interesting to see Michael Wells join the almost ever-present Ardie Savea as the final Loose Forward with Michael Hooper usually the man wearing the Waratahs LF jersey in our TOTR. Having managed points tallies of just 5, 6 and 5 in his last three games, Wells scored by far his highest total of the season this week thanks to a double against the Reds.

Well done to this week's best performing bru in the whole of our SR fantasy game - Paul Wilson from South Africa! His team, 'Druss's Disaffected Acrobats', sit inside the top 4% globally in our fantasy game and scored 265.5 points in this round with Smith captain and Handre Pollard as the nominated kicker.

In our daily Super Rugby fantasy game - a different kind of test as you select five players you believe will perform best on each day of the Super Rugby season from lists we provide - the best possible selections were as follows:

Friday: Creevy, Savea, Laumpae, Koroibete, Pollard (95 points)
Saturday: Mafi, Smith, Beale, Faddes, Foley (122 points)

Good luck to all in Round 15 where we return to a 7-game round that starts on Friday with the Chiefs v the Reds.

Oh yeah picking 'Centre' Goosen because he was moved to the Wing worked a real treat! 5 miserable points - Pah! Hurricanes unthreatened in 4th meant they really couldn't be bothered vs Los Jaguares. I hate this Conference system. Its a bit patronising to SA & Aus really. "You make the semis because you weren't quite as hopeless as the others".
