Super Rugby: Team of Round 1

The opening weekend of 2019 Super Rugby action didn't disappoint with plenty of even games and a typical upset or two at Superbru. As usual, Round 1 was particularly interesting for fantasy players as we begin to get an idea of how each team and their squad is looking for this campaign. Based purely on the opening weekend alone, it appears best to avoid Stormers players, keep a close eye on the next Chiefs team sheet and pick Rosko Speckman!

After scoring a brace on debut for the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld, Speckman was the ideal captain in the Superbru Team of Round One. You can see the opening TOTR (Team of the Round) below.

Most represented teams in this week's TOTR: Bulls , Crusaders and Rebels (3 players each).

Interestingly, in this week's TOTR the backs are made up of players from those three most represented teams only after strong wins for the Bulls and Rebels and a narrow but high-scoring win for the Crusaders over the Blues in Auckland. Mataele and Ennor both played key roles in that victory as the TOTR graphic suggests though a brace for 'Penalty Try' prevented there being even more fantasy points on offer for Crusaders XV!

Marnus Schoeman is the standout name among the forwards after he scored a hat-trick against the Jaguares to help the Lions to a 16-25 win in Buenos Aires. The loose forward was quite unlucky to miss out on the TOTR captaincy after that performance! Akker van der Merwe was another forward to cross the try line more than once in Round 1 as he scored a brace against the Sunwolves in Singapore. With two home games against the Blues and the Stormers up next, it will be interesting to see how the Sharks get on following that big opening win against the Japanese side.

Though the Team of the Round is of course the standard we all like to aim for when making our picks ahead of each Super Rugby weekend, it is of course unlikely many will get close to such a strong points tally (as the community average on that image shows) meaning it is also interesting to take a look at the community best team.

This week, the best performing player in our SR fantasy game was Carli Els from South Africa! Carli finished in the top 10% on the global leaderboard in last year's fantasy game and has made an incredible start to this year's campaign with this team:

As I'm sure you'll agree, backing Speckman with the captaincy for his Bulls debut was a brave decision that is worthy of the global Yellow Cap! A huge well done to Carli and to those of you that ended this weekend with Yellow Caps in your private pools. As for those with a wooden spoon, we all know this is a marathon not a sprint, so good thinking on carefully timing your pursuit to the top.

In our daily Super Rugby fantasy game - a different kind of test as you select five players you believe will perform best on each day of the Super Rugby season from lists we provide - the best possible selections were as follows:

Friday: Alaalatoa, Frizell, Lienert-Brown, Maddocks, Cooper (75 points)
Saturday: S. Barrett, A Ioane, Kriel, Bridge, Pollard (94 points)

Feel free to let us know in the comments how you got on in R1 and how many of the TOTR you had in your XV. The deadline for Round 2 will again be on Friday when the Highlanders take on the Reds so make sure you've completed your tinkering by then!
