Super Rugby Restart: Round 4 Predictions

Super Rugby AU begins tomorrow (Friday 3 July) meaning we now have some additional fixtures in our Super Rugby Restart predictor game!

After picking up 2/2 correct outcomes like most of the Superbru community last week, here's what Hutch is going for in Round 4:

Reds v Waratahs

If you’re considering picking a home win, I’d advise against checking the Historic Results tab, which shows that the Tahs always win this fixture. Plus with home advantage diminished with no crowds, picking the Waratahs seems sensible. Yet I’m still picking the Reds, with the Tahs missing a few key players and really this is a whole new world so I’m ignoring the historic results. Reds by 4

Highlanders v Crusaders

Any match involving the Crusaders feels like an easy pick at the moment, because they are looking so difficult to beat. They are confident enough to drop Sevu Reece to the bench, but still boast a back three of Leicester Fainga’anuku, Will Jordan and David Havili. Mitch Hunt of the Highlanders is up against his old team, but this is only going one way I think. Crusaders by 11

Brumbies v Rebels

This feels fairly straightforward too, with the Brumbies at home against an inexperienced Rebels side missing some key players. The Brumbies had been going well before the enforced break, including a 39-26 win over the Rebels in February, and although they are missing Tom Banks, there is still plenty of quality that should see them overcome the men from Melbourne. Brumbies by 9

Chiefs v Hurricanes

My instinct says to go for a home win here, but I’m going to wait for the team news. Neither side has registered a win since the restart, and the two squads are fairly evenly matches, but the Chiefs have shown just a little more quality so far, including pushing the Crusaders all the way in Christchurch last weekend. Chiefs by 6

It seems unlikely that there will be a 2020 S.A. Super Rugby tournament. If it does kick off, thank goodness we won't be playing against the antipodean contingent, as our teams will be lucky to finish the match with a dozen players on the park. We've seen how the new rules have led to enormous penalty counts, and to my mind the South African teams are always the slowest to adapt. Half our players were born offside, and our lumbering giants will struggle to quickly comply with the speeding-up of-play-at-the-breakdown by the new tackle/release and going-to-ground laws. 5 Jul 07:21

The Sun has set on the Wolves, Neo9374. Prior to the lockdown, it had been determined that 2020 would be their swansong; and with Covid-19 travel restrictions, it was deemed impractical to include them in the Super Rugby restarts. 5 Jul 07:10
