Preview: Mzansi Super League

Here at Superbru we're very excited for the Mzansi Super League which kicks-off this Friday at 19:00 CAT in Cape Town. The latest tournament to be added to the circuit of top quality t20 competitions around the world, South Africa is set to welcome many of the game's top performers as six teams battle to become the first ever franchise to lift the 'MSL' trophy.

We have both a predictor and fantasy game on offer for the Mzansi Super League with the predictor being the first tournament to adopt our new 'Sachin' format and scoring system. With there being no previous form or head-to-head records to go by when making your picks for the MSL, things are bound to be very tricky to begin with so here's a run-through of the squads each franchise has assembled to help you out.

As mentioned, there'll be six teams in the MSL, with the venues for the tournament being Newlands (Cape Town), Kingsmead (Durban), the Wanderers (Johannesburg), St George's Oval (Port Elizabeth), Boland Park (Paarl) and SuperSport Park (Centurion).

*It's important to note that the above squads can still change and that there are various reasons for certain players only being available at certain times of the MSL such as the Proteas tour of Australia which is ongoing, the UAE's t10 competition and the current Test series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

The structure of the tournament means most rounds of our predictor game contain four fixtures and these rounds are fairly consistent - occurring each weekend and in midweek for the competition's duration (a month). Our fantasy game is played in a daily format meaning some rounds require you to pick a four-man team from just one fixture while others will include more than one MSL match.

We're keen to know your thoughts on who will come out on top in the first ever MSL. Let us know in the comments who you want to win and also who you think will win! Best of luck to all in our new 'Sachin' predictor format, feel free to also leave any questions you may have about either of our MSL games in the comments section.

Wow the players are so mixed up considering which teams they normally play for. I'm backing 'Durban Heat' but expect 'The Tshwane Spartans' to be a good team. Should be good fun...

Hi Jack . Could be a case of looking up 1st & 2nd team batting averages per ground and also waiting for post toss batting/fielding decisions. If a batsman isn't required to bat as their team has chased down the runs early I feel you should get the back-up's points. Its so harsh on early pickers. Of course you could just bring forward the deadline by 30 mins (like in other Non SB contests) so we all go in not knowing who has won the toss?

Hi Paul, thanks for the feedback - this is a fair point. The reason we don’t auto substitute a batsman that hasn’t batted is down to the fact that they often pick up points for other things while in the field or even when bowling in some cases. In such an instance, you wouldn’t want them subbed for a low-scoring batsman that did get to the crease; a similar point can be made for bowlers who don’t get a chance to bowl. Since players in all bands score points for all three disciplines, backups will only become live if a player doesn’t feature at all. 13 Nov 15:03

Hi all, i reckon tshwane and paarl will be the dominant sides but anything can happen in T20 cricket. Excited to see the international stars perform but also hoping the local boys take this opportunity to showcase their talents.

Hi. dont like picks format new - - - i used to be able to go say 46 runs / 1 wicket....... no both must be narrow or comfortable or easy........ so it makes it a guessing game now

@Waycat, I totally understand what you're getting at. With the new Sachin cricket game model there's only one pick option to go with whether a team bats 1st or 2nd.
One of our main priorities with the new game model was to simplify the pick process to make it quick and easy to do. We've always felt that accurately predicting the actual run and/or wicket margins is quite a shot in the dark - a bit like throwing a dart at a target using your feet while doing a blindfolded handstand. You might get it right sometimes, but it's not all that easy to achieve reliably. So the new game model tackles this head on with its elegant simplicity.
I'd recommend making your picks in advance and review them once the toss has been done if you feel a change is needed.
We're confident that the new game model will be a lot easier and more engaging to play than our outgoing version. But, we'll definitely review things after the MSL and consider any improvements if needed to address this kind of concern. 15 Nov 10:36

@Red Col, we've always found the previous approach of picking a specific runs and/or wicket margin to be more of a guessing game of sorts with a fair amount of blind luck being needed to accurately predict the outcome. Ironically this is one of the elements that the new Sachin cricket game model aims to minimize by giving you specific ranges of picks to consider, thereby reducing the impact of random runs and/or wicket scores to some extent.

It might take a bit of re-framing how you think about making your picks compared to the past as you carefully consider how close a match might end up being, but let's see how things go during the first tournament to operate under the new Sachin rules.

Nonetheless we'll be reviewing things during and after the tournament to gauge how things are going. So please feel free to contact us on support@superbru.com if you have any feedback.

Good luck! 15 Nov 10:56

All i'm saying is often a team will regularly win by 30 or 40 rugs but if batting second, only win by 1 run off the last over.
new system cant allow me to pick like that now.
