Premier League: Team of Round 34

A Premier League fantasy round that will be remembered for lots of people getting excited about Brighton's double gameweek, only for Cardiff to be the side that took advantage of it instead. After losing 2-0 at Burnley on Saturday, Neil Warnock's Cardiff went to Brighton for their additional game in this round and walked away with a massive victory. That 2-0 away win damaged a lot of brus' predictor and fantasy rounds but also means Cardiff will now feel they can stay up after dragging the Seagulls into a relegation fight.

The Bluebirds' goalkeeper, Neil Etheridge, would also make this TOTR (not for the first time) if it weren't for team limits. Here's a look at this week's best performing XI along with the community stats for R34.

Community average score in Round 34: 55.8
Community best in Round 34: 113
TOTR score: 154

Defence

Second to Etheridge's 10 points for making lots of saves at Burnley and keeping a clean sheet against Brighton, Alisson is this week's TOTR goalkeeper following his clean sheet against Chelsea at Anfield. After what was a huge win for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk also makes this XI for the clean sheet and an 'assist' for Mo Salah's goal - I'm sure all fellow van Dijk owners will join me in admitting this one was quite fortunate given that Salah's incredible strike was all down to him rather than the pass he received!

Cardiff defensive duo Bruno Ecuele Manga and Sean Morrison are the other two members of the back three following their double gameweek which didn't just include a clean sheet at the Amex, but attacking returns too! Morrison scored the all important second goal that sealed Cardiff's win while Ecuele Manga's additional points were down to a high number of tackles and interceptions.

We do of course have another double gameweek coming up in Round 35 with 8 teams playing twice. Whilst this week has shown how hard it is to predict which teams will do well defensively, Watford and Wolves will both feel they can earn at least one clean sheet.

Midfield

The R34 ideal captain was Tottenham's Lucas Moura after his hat-trick against Huddersfield which was the first ever hat-trick at Spurs' new ground. Though many of us quickly switched to Lucas in the daily 5-a-side fantasy game once it was confirmed that Son would be rested for the Manchester City Champions League clash as expected, those of you that had him in your 11-a-side fantasy deserve special credit as that's a very brave but ultimately very good pick.

Alongside the more obvious midfield options that make this TOTR, Raheem Sterling and Paul Pogba, we have Nathan Redmond and Ryan Fraser who are both the standout MF picks for their respective clubs. Like Wilson in attack, Fraser is a known threat for Bournemouth though their 5-0 battering of Brighton was so unexpected that not a single Superbru player managed an exact pick for that game in our predictor which is very unusual.

Nathan Redmond appears a decent option for the run-in if you're after a differential. His brace against Wolves is a timely reminder of his attacking threat and like James Ward-Prowse, he has looked good during Hasenhüttl's reign. Southampton face Newcastle, Watford, Bournemouth, West Ham and Huddersfield in their remaining games.

Strikers

Unlike Southampton, Burnley have a rather difficult stretch of games between now and the end of the season meaning Chris Wood would be a brave pick going forward despite his recent scoring form and TOTR place. As I mentioned in my picks piece last week, Wood or Barnes score nearly all of Burnley's goals (naturally I picked the wrong one on Saturday), but the Clarets now face Chelsea, City, Everton and Arsenal.

Callum Wilson is a far better strike option based on fixtures, especially with Huddersfield at home next. However, like Burnley, there are two Bournemouth strikers that are hard to choose between. Wilson has managed 132 points so far this season with teammate Josh King scoring 133!

A 14-game Round 35 begins on Saturday at 12:30 UK time when Manchester City host Tottenham. The teams playing twice in Round 35 are - Spurs, Brighton, Watford, Southampton, Wolves, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City. This is the final gameweek that will see more or less fixtures than the usual 10 so you can make transfers freely knowing that players will at least have a fixture in the remaining rounds (starts are of course not guaranteed!). Best of luck to all..
