Premier League Fantasy Football Tips: Round Two

As always, there are plenty of factors to keep in mind when selecting your Premier League fantasy and 5-a-side fantasy teams for this weekend! Will Chelsea and Liverpool rotate following the Super Cup? Are Manchester United suddenly defensively sound? Who on earth is going to play in goal for Liverpool?

Using the average taken from the thousands of picks to have been made in our main game - the Premier League Predictor - we're able to provide you with a 'predicted goals' tally for each team in every round of the competition and we believe this can come in handy when choosing between certain players for your fantasy points.

Round Two: Predicted Goals

Here are two graphs displaying the predicted goals data for this weekend. Since the start of last season, Liverpool and Manchester City have tended to battle it out for the most predicted goals each week, and as you can see below, it's Liverpool who the majority of Superbru players expect to score the most goals this weekend. City face a tough test against Tottenham at home but still have a predicted goals tally of 2.3 while Arsenal's home game against Burnley is also expected to bring some fantasy points for their attacking players.

The fact that the Super Cup was played over 120 minutes arguably makes Liverpool (and Chelsea) options more risky than usual, meaning some players may opt to hand their fantasy captaincy to 'safer' candidates such as Arsenal or Manchester United forwards given neither side has played in midweek.

Outside of the 'big six', it's interesting to note that both Everton and Crystal Palace have 'predicted goals conceded' numbers of less than 1. I certainly think Toffees players are worth considering this week for their game against Watford at home, with Gylfi Sigurdsson being one of my advised picks in Round 2.

Round Two: Players to Consider

This week my picks are all very much based on what we learned in Round 1. We have an interesting divide of fixtures in our 5-a-side fantasy game this week as Saturday is filled with several top teams playing (City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool), Sunday has two quite even-looking fixtures where defenders appear hard to pick and Monday has a very intriguing clash as Wolves host Manchester United. My third pick for the week will be involved at Molineux, while picks 1 and 2 will both (hopefully!) feature on Saturday.

Nicolas Pepe
After a complicated summer involving AFCON, a big money transfer and not a lot of pre-season training, it was always likely that Pepe wouldn't start at Newcastle last week. However, I think there's a great chance he'll be in from minute 1 at the Emirates on Saturday in what looks like a perfect fixture to get him going. The Emirates crowd will be very excited to see their new record signing and the Gunners tend to produce goals when playing at home. There's every chance Pepe will be involved in some of them if he is given the start out on the right wing.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Lots of you will already have Sigurdsson in your full fantasy teams as he's been producing Premier League fantasy points for years now and the Icelandic midfielder is certainly worth considering for the next few rounds. Everton face Watford, Villa, Wolves, Bournemouth and Sheffield United in their next five games so you'd expect Sigurdsson to pick up points through assists, long shots and/or set-pieces. Watford were battered 3-0 at home by Brighton last week so this does look like a promising fixture for Everton.

Anthony Martial
It was impossible not to take notice of Anthony Martial last week as he started the season back in the Manchester United number 9 shirt and playing as a nine to great effect. Marcus Rashford suggested that he and Martial may switch between the left wing and striker position throughout the season but it seems sensible to assume that Martial will be the man lining up down the middle again at Molineux on Monday. That fixture represents another opportunity for United to play on the counter attack which suits the Frenchman nicely. He's available to select as a midfielder in our full fantasy game but be aware he's been moved to the striker band in the 5-a-side!

Best of luck to you all with your fantasy teams this weekend.

Hi Jack ("Fly me to Cuba!") I see you are extrapolating using the statisical 'Law of Large Numbers'. Where the collective concensus ends up being close to the ACTUAL average. Yet no one individual is likely to get these goal counts exact that often. The best example (as shown on the Netflix Stats Nova doco) is getting 100 people to guess how many Jelly Beans are in a big jar. The average of these picks came within 5% of the correct answer yet no one got it bang on.

So shall we do our EPL Predictor scores based on rounding these averages going back to August of 2018? BTW Adrian looked OK for Liverpool even if he cheated to save from Abraham in the shoot-out. His saving right foot was 10cm in front of the line!
