NEW: Update to ‘Sachin’ cricket scoring system ahead of 2019 World Cup
As anyone who has played one of our cricket predictor games since last year’s Mzansi Super League will know, we introduced a new cricket scoring system known as ‘Sachin’ towards the end of last year. There were two major reasons for the change.
1. To ensure picking became less arbitrary as many players felt that selecting the exact number of runs or wickets a team would win by was often too much of a stab in the dark.
2. To ensure our scoring became more reflective of cricket results - primarily through the addition of ‘balls remaining’ as a factor to consider.
Whilst we still believe that these two points stand and that Sachin has therefore been a success to an extent, we agree with those of you that have helpfully been in touch to suggest further improvements can be made. Don’t panic though, Sachin lovers! We’re fully aware that for many, the new format has been gratefully received. The fundamental way in which you make your cricket picks will not be changing.
These improvements have been made in time to come into effect for this summer’s Cricket World Cup, with the 50-over ODI format a key factor in our decision to make this update. All cricket predictor games at Superbru will be adopting these changes, though ongoing tournaments such as the IPL and the CSA T20 challenge will of course continue with the existing Sachin format.
Secondly, Sachin’s points values have led to lower-scoring leaderboards than many of us are used to in other Superbru tournaments. The reward for picking the correct team and margin can be improved to allow for a more exciting Yellow Cap pursuit and a greater potential to mount a comeback during the latter stages of a tournament.
Additional margin tier
To widen pick variation and the scope to make more ‘bold’ or ‘tactical’ predictions, we have added a fourth margin tier to our games. In addition to the existing Narrow, Comfortable and Easy options there will now be a ‘Thrashing’ category available to pick. The effect this has on the numbers behind these margins is shown below for the upcoming Cricket World Cup (the t20 equivalents will be available to view when our next new tournament launches).
With the batting totals managed in the modern game continuing to rise, the potential for some dominant ‘Thrashing’ victories in this summer’s World Cup is certainly there! Four of the six highest ODI innings totals have come in the last four years, with South Africa and England both scoring over 430 runs on two occasions since 2015.
Increased Margin Point value
With this additional tier in mind, the difficulty of receiving a Margin Point (MP) in our cricket games just increased. As a result, your reward for picking up MPs will also be enhanced. Rather than the current 0.5 MP Sachin value, players will now receive 1 MP in addition to the Win Point you receive for picking the correct team if the correct margin is also nailed.
Rising Win Point value for knockouts
As many of you will already be accustomed to in lots of our other tournaments across different sports, we will be re-introducing an increased WP value in the knockout stages of cricket competitions. In the case of the Cricket World Cup, this will mean that picking the correct team will be worth 2 points in the semi-finals, and 3 in the final. These increases reflect the difficulty of picking fixtures that are likely to be harder to call than group stage clashes.
It’s worth noting that this final update will mean there is also a slight change in which scoring is displayed on Superbru. Rather than showing the ‘Result’ or ‘Max’ icons you may have become used to with Sachin or in our football games, scoring will instead be shown with WP and MP labels as it is in rugby. This does not affect the way in which you will make cricket picks.
We hope you all enjoy playing our predictor and fantasy games for what looks set to be a very exciting Cricket World Cup. The tournament is now less than 50 days away! If you have any questions about the event then please feel free to ask us in the comments below or via our support channel. Those of you who had already made picks for CWC matches will have your picks maintained but will be individually notified about these changes to the scoring system.

What needs to be improved?
In attempting to reduce the arguably random nature of our original scoring system, we agree that the option of three margins when picking a winner can feel too simplistic for some players. We’ve been pleased with how representative these margins have been of a given match, and the variety of ‘Easy’, ‘Comfortable’ and ‘Narrow’ wins has been encouraging, but there is room to increase the ability to pick tactically whilst maintaining this balance.Secondly, Sachin’s points values have led to lower-scoring leaderboards than many of us are used to in other Superbru tournaments.
