Autumn Nations Cup: Round 1 Predictions

There's an extra competitive element to this year's November Internationals as we're introduced to the 'Autumn Nations Cup' for the first time ever. The Six Nations teams are being joined by Georgia and Fiji to form an 8-team tournament that will see 4 rounds of 4 matches played across 4 weeks.

After an initial group stage, the final round will see 1st in Group A play 1st in Group B, 2nd play 2nd and so on to determine the final standings.

Group A: England, Georgia, Ireland, Wales

Group B: Fiji, France, Italy, Scotland

The fact we have an actual tournament this Autumn means that in addition to our predictor game, we are also running a full Autumn Nations Cup fantasy game. Make sure you've joined both before the kick-off on Friday night so that you have two games to enjoy throughout this period of international rugby!

Round 1 features a big game first up as Ireland host Wales and will finish with what should be an entertaining clash between France and Fiji. Here are my Round 1 picks.

Ireland v Wales

Wales are suffering a dreadful run of form at the moment, with 5 defeats in a row, the latest of which was a home loss to Scotland. Whilst they still aren't a bad team, I can't see them going to Dublin and picking up a win this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing James Lowe in action for Ireland, and it could be fairly comfortably for the home side. Ireland by 9

Italy v Scotland

This is often a Six Nations wooden spoon shootout, but Scotland seem to be streets ahead of Italy at the moment. A win in Cardiff a couple of weeks ago should set them up for another victory here, and I don't think the loss of Finn Russell and Adam Hastings will affect them too much. Scotland by 18

England v Georgia

Eddie Jones is handing opportunities to a few of the fringe players, whilst maintaining the core of the side. With several people looking to prove their worth, it could either turn into a rout of the unfancied Georgians, or a disjointed, stuttering and unconvincing performance. The Englishman in me is opting for the former. England by 38

France v Fiji

France have been resurgent in the last year or so, and probably should have won the Six Nations Grand Slam, were it not for an off day against Scotland. It means it could be a long afternoon for Fiji, and although I haven't seen the team lineups yet, I'm expecting a comfortable win for France. France by 23

If you have selected French or Fijian players in your Starting XV, they will score zero. Because they will get no minutes on the pitch, they will automatically be substituted by your reserve player in that position, provided that your reserve does get minutes on the pitch.

You may remember that at last year's Rugby World Cup some games were cancelled due to bad weather. Selected players from those matches were treated as per the above. I had a full compliment of All Blacks, including Captain and Kicker; so it cost me badly. I knew that the matches might be cancelled, but didn't believe they would be. A big mistake! Therefore, despite wanting French players in my Autumn Nations Fantasy squad, and knowing that Fijians had contracted Covid, I never picked any Frenchmen. Also a risk of course, but this time I was rewarded. 14 Nov 10:02

Hi there Aidan. we may all pick six players from every team. our transfers are unlimited and 8 subs in addition to the starting 15. when we come to the round of finals our allotted amount for remaining teams increase as some teams will be eliminated- therefor again equal picks per team. you can also find the rules in the fantasy tourny as you create your full 23 member squad. suggest you also read carefully from start to end as you start each step until you are done. and lastly- need to pick and save your picks for captain, vice captain, kicker and substitute kicker before you can save your starting 15. 13 Nov 18:13

Rules clearly state if a player doesn't play then the points of the substitute in that position are relevant
