2019 IPL at Superbru

The 2019 IPL begins this weekend with last year's champions, the Chennai Super Kings, taking on a Royal Challengers Bangalore side that disappointed again last season despite boasting two of the tournament's greatest batsmen - Virat Kholi and AB de Villiers.

The competition is always great at Superbru with two games available for you to play. Our daily fantasy game gives you the chance to pick a four-player team for each and every day of this year's tournament while our more traditional predictor game requires you to pick a winner for each match and how close you believe the fixture will be.

Throughout this article you can learn a little more about the squads each of this year's franchises have in terms of overseas players. These are of course subject to change with injuries, as today has proved with two South African quicks, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi, withdrawing from the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings are expected to be as strong as ever but it is the team they beat in the 2018 final that the bookies currently have as favourites to scoop this year's trophy. Sunrisers Hyderabad have been competitive for a few seasons now having won the tournament in 2016 as well as coming runners up last year. The Sunrisers' bowling stands out as a particular strength, with excellent leg-spinner Rashid Khan and the ever-reliable Bhuvneshwar Kumar both part of their attack.

Both of those players tend to be in the wickets meaning they are solid fantasy options though the wide fantasy scoring system we have in place at Superbru means that other actions are important to consider. In the case of bowling, economy rates are important. For this reason, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine has proved himself to be a great pick in recent seasons; the Trinidadian has the best IPL career economy rate of any bowler (6.54) despite playing 98 matches!

An explosive batting performance is where you can really pick up points though and with there being space for two batsmen and an all-rounder in your 4-man team (though all players receive points for all three areas of the game), it's the time your selected players spend at the crease that really matters. Interestingly, the IPL's two all-time top run scorers will be up against each other in this year's opening game as Suresh Raina (4985 runs) and Virat Kholi (4948 runs) will both be eager to become the first player to reach 5,000 IPL runs. As is often the case when RCB are playing, the fantasy picks made so far by the Superbru community for Day One show Kholi and de Villiers to be by far the most popular options.

You can join each of our games for this year's IPL via the links below. We hope you enjoy the tournament and be aware that the Cricket World Cup follows soon afterwards! Our predictor game for the CWC is also now live so you can join nice and early with the fantasy equivalent to follow very soon.

HOW DO WE PLAY IPL ON SUPERBRU

Why can't the Daily Fantasy game be amended to per match ? With between six and eight overseas players per squad, there are always two to four that will not be playing. By making picks for the second game of the day you risk your players scoring zero points because if you make your picks for the first game before the team selections are out, you can easily have selections that do not play. Please think about making picks for every game. You do it for the Test Series competition, why not the IPL and the forthcoming World Cup ?

Thanks Bomber. We discussed a daily vs per match fantasy game structure a few months ago and there were a few concerns around that, mostly the potential for users to inadvertently miss picks for the second match of a day.
Sticking with the daily format rather than per match also adds an interesting tactical element to the game between the balance of the two matches, which increases pick diversity and scoring differentiation.
The daily setup is also consistent with the Test Cricket structure where matches starting on the same day are grouped in the same round - e.g. the triple match round on Boxing day last year. 22 Mar 11:20

I also think that your new predictor cricket scoring system was created for those SuperBru players who do not know much about cricket. It is now brain dead picking, with all the fun gone out of it. Also, when you pick narrow and the result is easy, you get the same number of points as those that said comfortable. They were closer to having the result correct, yet they receive no benefit. And finally, when it comes to play off time, the win points are not higher like it was before. It should still be three points for the final, not a measly one point. As a lifelong cricket fan and player for many years, this format has taken all the fun out of it. There is no more risk/reward picking.

I'm backing this 110%. The new scoring system takes all the fun out of the cricket picks. It really doesn't make sense in a number of ways such as mentioned above. I'm also a lifelong cricket fan and the cricket picks (especially the IPL) used to be a lot of excitement each year. But not anymore. I'm even considering whether to play the IPL or not at this stage. 22 Mar 06:51

Bomber, I have had essays of correspondence with Dawid about this whole issue of the cricket system having gone to pick-a-box with absolutely no incentive.
He mailed me today to say that there are at least bonus points in play for the IPL like the soccer for players managing to pick a full-house - that is a start! Let's BUG THEM UNTIL THEY CANNOT REFUSE ANY LONGER! ;-)) 22 Mar 22:24

Generaal - that is always their answer - send us an e-mail - it is easier to reply and then ignore your suggestions. At least here the SuperBru can voice their agreement/disagreement with what is stated. Why must I send long e-mails when it is a no-brainer to award more points for semi-finals, play-offs and finals ? 23 Mar 10:57

im backing u 100% bomber...no reward for play off games means that if you lead by 3 points going into the semis is kind off a safe cushion with the new setup...previously it wasnt like this...and like u mentioned it dampens he mood for cricket predictor games...my club had a discussion about this yesterday and everyone hates the new format...no variation...no strategy = boring 24 Mar 06:06

Hi Bomber. Regarding your valid statement that "when you pick narrow and the result is easy, you get the same number of points as those that said comfortable": If this was changed, I'd only ever pick "Comfortable" as I'd be guaranteed a "margin point". 24 Mar 08:45

Hi again Bomber! Personally, I've had numerous discussions with Superbru Support via email, and have always found them to be responsive, detailed, and patient; while explaining their applied logic. 24 Mar 08:49

No Dread...u would choose your own run and wicket margin..U played the previous cricket predictor before the change? Doesn't sound like it. There u could use your imagination and apply your knowledge. 24 Mar 18:30

DreadedRed - Agreed - with the "Comfortable" statement - but that just shows how lacking this scoring system is. With the old system, you could choose a win by 5 runs, and someone else by 26 runs and you could catch up 2.5 points. Now your best chance is to catch up a lousy half a point at a time. That is no challenge at all - it is boring !!!!!!!! 25 Mar 05:54

Hey Bomber and The Real DJS!
Thanks for the feedback on the previous system. I never played under those rules. I guess it has been simplified, and I understand that the new system perhaps favors the amateur. Being relatively clueless myself, I’m okay with the current system. 26 Mar 15:29

Gosh Jack you've been busy genning up on things. You might be hard to beat in the Fantasy. The Predictor was 25% chance but is now about 50% IMHO.

I was relieved to see that UK Subscription channel BT Sport have FINALLY added the IPL to its Programme Guide, this was after some last minute deal was cut. Sounds like Brexit!

Yes I agree about the Cricket predictor scoring system. I suggest you guys have a round table discussion and go back to the old scoring system which was much more effective for players who analysed cricket and have some knowledge of the game. This new system reminds me of the film Dumb and Dumber. Guys I think you have had enough feedback to turf this new scoring system for cricket....

I agree that this scoring system is lacking. The old method was so much better. You pick by wickets and runs and then depending on the result, our picks get applied accordingly.

Hi SuperBru - as The Professor has said - you guys have had enough feedback to turf this new scoring system for cricket. However, here is a solution that would take SuperBru to the next level. How about when you set up your pool, you can select between two scoring systems ? In the rugby tournaments you have a classis competition and a head-to-head competition choice. So why not have a scoring method choice ? this will make everybody happy. Then, when you have this working, we can apply it to rugby because I have sent an alternative scoring system to SuperBru before and it has been tossed out.

Hi Jack. Before tournament started it stated that Slam points will be 3-5 matches 1 point and 6 games is 2 points untill Round 13. Now I see I received only 1 point for Round 3 which had 6 matches. And nowhere in "scoring" is Slam points now mentioned. Give clarity.
