Scoring and how to play

The basics
For each race of the season, we ask you to make some predictions as to how the drivers will finish. These are known as picks. The more accurate you are, the more points you'll earn. The goal of the game is to top your pool(s) (which you can set up with friends) and, if you're very good, to compete strongly on the global leaderboard, which encompasses all players in the game.
Email reminders
We'll send you an email reminder to make your picks a few days before each race. Please note that we can't guarantee delivery of email as there are things beyond our control out there: so expect it, but don't rely on it.
Deadline and the Early Bru Point
The deadline for making your picks for a race is the start time of the race as listed on SuperBru. If you make your picks before the start of qualifying, you will earn an Early Bru Point (EBP) (the early Bru catches the worm!) valued at EBPpts.
In our 2008 game we found that players who made their picks after qualifying earned on average 1.03 points more per race thanks to their better informed position. Not wanting to restrict picking to happening before qualifying (or earlier) we introduced the Early Bru Point (EBP) in 2009 to balance the situation out. The EBP proved a successful addition to the game and we're retaining it in 2010, but increasing its value to EBPpts to account for (1) the increase in picking 10 drivers (up from 8) and (2) the pre vs post-qualifying scores from 2009, which were closer to 2pts.
Race scoring
On the pool results you will see the results for the pool(s) in which you play. You will pick 10 drivers, and categorise them into winner, podium and points finishers. Scoring works as follows:
2 pt Early Bru Point if you make your predictions before qualifying starts
1 pt for each driver who finishes in the top 10
1 pt for correctly predicting the race winner
1 pts for correctly predicting that a driver will finish on the podium
1 pt for correctly predicting the driver of the fastest lap
So, for example, if you correctly predict the race winner, you will earn 1pt (top 10 finish) + 1pt (podium finish) + 1pt (race winner) = 3pts. A non-winning podium finish (i.e. 2nd or 3rd, order irrelevant) will earn you 1pt (top 10 finish) + 1pt (podium finish) = 2pts.
Default picks
The Formula 1 season is very long, and along the way a lot of us are bound to miss a week. To help counter this, each player will be eligible for a default pick for one race only. The default pick will be the starting grid as determined by qualifying. Players will qualify for points for the race winner, podium positions and 4th - 8th positions. No point for the fastest lap will be available, and no Early Bru Point (EBP) will be available.
Late joiner defaults
Players joining the season after the first race will be allocated the starting grid from the first race only along the lines laid out above under Default picks.
