Scoring system

The fundamental goal of SuperBru is to score as many points as possible, by making as many accurate predictions as possible. Here's what you'll predict, and how points are allocated for those predictions:
What you must predict
For every game in the series, you must pick:
1) The game outcome (team 1 win, draw or team 2 win)
2) The margin of victory (i.e. score difference)
Draw scenario in Currie Cup final 2009
If there is a draw at 80 minutes in the Currie Cup final, 20 minutes of extra time will be played. If the teams are still tied at the end of extra time, i.e. the 100 minute mark, then the game will be recorded as a draw - but, the team with the higher log position going into the final (Bulls) will be crowned the Currie Cup champions.
In SuperBru, we are looking for the outcome of the game, not the tournament. If extra time is played, the scores will simply be added on for margin purposes (e.g. if at 80 minutes the score is 20 - 20 and after extra time it is Bulls 26 - 20 Cheetahs, then the margin will be Bulls by 6). If you believe the game will end in a draw at 100 minutes, then pick a draw.
If the game ends in a 100 minute draw and you picked the Bulls, you will not be awarded Win Points (we are looking for the result of the game in isolation, not the whole tournament.)
Points allocation
SuperBru features several different kinds of points, and understanding them may help inform your picking strategy. For example, you might want to go for extreme margins in the hopes of out-fringing your pool mates to a Bonus Point, but at the risk of not getting Margin Points.
Point name Value Description
Win Point
(WP)
1.0*
Scored by all players correctly predicting the game outcome (home team win, draw or away team win).
* Increases in value to 2 points in the semi-finals and 3 points in the final to reflect the greater difficulty of these games.
Margin Point
(MP)
0.5 Score by every player whose margin prediction is within 5 points of the real margin, taking into account winning team.

In the case of close games where the real margin is less than 5 points, players will qualify for a Margin Point if their prediction was for the incorrect team but within 5 points of the real margin. E.g. Player predicts Team A by 2 and Team B wins by 1 - player's prediction is within the 5 point range and a Margin Point is awarded. A Margin Point will not be awarded outside of this range. E.g. Player predicts Team A by 90, Team B wins by 84, no Margin Point is awarded.

Bonus Point
(BP)
1.0 The Bonus Point will appear in pools only and not on the Global Leaderboard because it is a relative point.

It is scored by player(s) whose margin prediction(s) is/are the closest to the actual marign. Point is split in case of ties (e.g. if two players qualify, they get 0.5 BP each). Must get the game outcome right (i.e. earn a WP) in order to qualify.

If a player joins a pool after the first game of the season has been played, they will not qualify for Bonus Points in this pool for the games played prior to their joining, even where their pick was more accurate than the next best in the pool. This ensures that players joining pools late cannot upset the scoring in those pools.
Grand Slam Point (GSP) 1 During the round robin stage (i.e. not for semi-finals or final), if you predict all the winners correctly in a round, you will qualify for a Grand Slam Point. If you default on any game in the round in question, you will lose qualification for the GSP.

Default picks

If no pick is recorded for you, you will qualify for a default pick. A default pick is a pick for the home team. If the home team wins, you will earn a Win Point (but no Margin or Bonus Points, plus you will be disqualified from Grand Slam Point for the round). If the home team loses, you will not score any points, and you will have used up a default. You are eligible for 5 default picks. Anyone joining the tournament late will be allocated late joiner default points up to a limit of 4 (i.e. home teams for the first round). Regular defaults will subsequently still apply over and above the late joiner defaults. Default picks will not be given out in the semi-finals or the final.
